Position Summary:
Responsible for a broad range of purchasing functions which includes electronic drug purchasing, meeting with pharmaceutical representatives and vendors, order verification, optimal inventory management, and pertinent duties to ensure regulatory compliance. Purchase pharmaceuticals and supplies consistent with departmental and UMass Memorial policies and procedures.
Major Responsibilities:
- Reviews and analyzes purchasing documents. This process includes conferring with departments regarding requirements, specifications, quantities and delivery requirements.
- Responsible for direct drug purchase orders to vendors of pharmaceuticals and supplies. This may involve some negotiation on pricing and delivery.
- Interacts with prime wholesaler to assure compliance with terms and conditions of contracts.
- Informs supervisor/staff of critical drug shortages and backorders.
- Handles formulary change management process.
Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
- Associates degree or equivalent in Business or liberal arts.
- Registered and certified pharmacy technician in the state of Massachusetts. If employee does not have upon hire, they would need to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business or liberal arts.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
- 3 years of previous hospital/community pharmacy experience.
- Knowledge of buying concepts.
- Proficient in pharmacy math, e. g., capable of calculating patient specific drug dosages.
- Knowledge and ability to use spreadsheet and database management programs and maintain electronic data files.
- Working knowledge of pharmaceutical medical terms, abbreviations, symbols, and drug names.
- Strong oral and written communication skills necessary to provide, as well as, receive oral and written Instructions with accuracy, efficiency and dependability.
Preferred:
- Demonstrates knowledge of pharmacy controlled substance regulations and other pharmacy regulations (USP 795, 797, and 800).
- Experience with drug contract negotiations.
