JOB SUMMARY: Performs various complex, diagnostic non invasive cardiac and vascular studies to evaluate the condition of the heart and related structures and the condition of the arterial and venous system. Follows established protocols, departmental policies and procedure, and hospital standards. Performs two dimensional/color Doppler/Doppler echocardiograms following procedural guidelines and protocols in the hospital, clinic or regional environments. Assists the physician in performing transesophageal echocardiograms. Performs echo stress testing. Maintains log on patients receiving services from the echo lab. Ensures proper transportation of patients. Utilizes various types of machinery and equipment including ultrasound equipment, transducers, aqua sonic gel, blood pressure equipment, and various other supplies needed to perform echo and vascular testing. Is responsible for the general maintenance of equipment; cleans and restocks work area daily Performs on-call duties. Properly responds to all telephone calls. Communicates effectively with patients, families and co-workers. Maintains a professional rapport with co-workers, other departments, hospital staff, and physicians. Adheres to organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Adheres to HIPPA policy and procedures. Represents the system’s core values of caring, commitment, integrity, teamwork, safety, communication, and service recovery. Participates in staff meetings, in-services, and continuing education for job related growth. Must have extensive knowledge of medical terminology as required in communicating with physicians, staff, hospital personnel, patients, and general public. Functions in a fast paced and frequently stressful environment. Maintain standards of accuracy and timeliness in carrying out duties and responsibilities. Attend regular continuing education programs and seminars in order to meet registry requirements for continued certification.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma. A Registered Vascular (RVT) and Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS or RCS) preferred. Must have graduated from an accredited Cardiovascular Science Program.
Experience: Must demonstrate thorough knowledge of the practices, procedures, and methods of performing vascular and echocardiograms. Must have knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Must have the knowledge and ability to confer with physicians regarding echocardiographic studies.
License/Registration: Must be eligible to set for Registered Vascular (RVT) and Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS or RCS) within six months of hire. Must have graduated from an accredited Cardiovascular Science Program. Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
Other: Works effectively with variety of professional and ancillary personnel, demonstrates mature judgement, initiative and proficiency in basic nursing skills, able to work without direct supervision, shows professional interest through self-development, continuing education, and involvement in professional organizations, presents positive attitude and professional appearance.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires range of motion within functional limits. Must have good eye-hand coordination, be able to stand for long periods of time. Must frequently lift and/or move and/or support the weight of 35 pounds or more in handling patients, medical equipment and supplies. Must have intact senses of smell and touch/manual finger dexterity. Requires functional vision and hearing. Ability to read and interpret documents such as instructional text books, safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals. Ability to speak, read and write English fluently. Able to push or pull echocardiography equipment. Will be able to respond in a Stat manner in cardiac emergency situations. Will be educated in universal precautions, infection control, and hazardous material policies and procedures.
