Purpose of Position

The Director of Leadership Development provides leadership in developing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive, student-focused leadership development program consisting of diverse opportunities that are accessible to all students (on-line and on-campus).
The role of the Director of Leadership Development is to support the missions and strategic priorities of UND and the Division of Student Affairs. The director serves as an advocate for student life and services on campus, works in partnership with all constituencies and supports the principles and values of the University and the Student Affairs Division.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes a comprehensive leadership development and community engagement program for students in alignment with UND LEADS.
    • Oversees, administers and sets a vision for leadership development and community engagement at UND
    • Designs and implements innovative leadership programs and initiatives to support engagement and sense of belonging amongst all students, including on-line/remote and in-person students.
    • Implements a multi-faceted, integrated pipeline of engagement programs that connect students to campus and community priorities and needs.
    • Communicates and articulates the role of leadership development programs effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
    • Partners with faculty, staff and community experts to support the development of specialty curricular and co-curricular leadership development and community engagement programs creating opportunities for students to engage in meaningful community service and social impact projects.
    • Fosters student learning and development outcomes related to inclusive and equitable leadership development.
    • Meets with students individually and in groups regarding leadership development and community engagement and directs students to appropriate resources.
    • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with students, student leaders, and student organizations, and contributes to a vibrant and welcoming campus experience for all students by being involved, visible, and engaged in all aspects of campus and student life. 
  • Coordinate the Presidential Leadership Fellows Scholarship Program
    • Provides leadership and administrative oversight in executing all aspects of the Presidential Leadership Fellows Program 
    • Develop and manage a 3-5 year plan for the Presidential Leadership Fellows Scholarship Program.
    • Develops and maintains connections and stewardship with program donors and alumni.
    • Oversees the development and maintenance of the Presidential Leadership Fellows Scholarship Program website.
    • Maintains historical records associated with the Presidential Leadership Fellows Scholarship Program. 
  • Manage departmental operations
    • Oversees fiscal operations of the department, including administering the departmental budget. 
    • Supervises student and professional staff responsible for implementing leadership development and community engagement initiatives.
    • Prepares reports, presentations and other related materials for divisional and campus stakeholders.
    • Develops and implements strategic plans to market and promote new and existing programs and opportunities related to leadership development and community engagement.
    • Provides direct oversight of program and administrative staff.
    • In partnership with Human Resources, oversees the recruiting, hiring, training, work assignments, supervision, performance standards, evaluations and feedback for all employees (professional staff and student staff members).
    • Develops (and/or makes recommendations on) new policies and procedures to meet programmatic needs.
    • Promotes the department's services and programs.
    • Seeks opportunities to cultivate and secure program sponsorships and grants. 
  • Develop partnerships to support and enhance programs.
    • Cultivates and establishes effective working relationships with individuals, campus departments and external partners to support departmental programs and initiatives.
    • Develops strategic and creative methods to incorporate student input and feedback in new programming and policies.
    • Develops and maintains strong relationships with students, student groups, staff and faculty.
    • Leads committees related to special projects/initiatives focused on student leadership, engagement and belonging.
    • Collaborates with campus partners to market and promote leadership programs and engagement activities.
    • Leads internal and external committees and groups related to initiatives focused on student leadership, engagement and belonging.
    • Facilitates partnerships, collaborations, and research related to leadership development.
    • Collaborates with campus colleagues and constituencies to align co-curricular programming in student leadership development with curricular learning outcomes and facilitates a coordinated approach for leadership development opportunities.
    • Collaborates with other departments to align and execute recognition programs. 
  • Facilitate assessment activities
    • Assesses student needs, interests and feedback and makes recommendations for necessary and desirable changes.
    • Remains abreast of current trends and best practices in the field of student affairs related to student leadership, engagement, identity development, civic engagement and sense of belonging.
    • Applies relevant data, student development theories, and leadership development models when planning and developing programs in support of student learning and growth.
    • Evaluates program areas; develops and assesses learning outcomes of all programs and services.
    • Provides a data driven approach to program development, assessment, and evaluation.
    • Develops and implements systems to assess the quality and effectiveness of programs and establishes ongoing quality improvement methods.
    • Analyzes organizational issues, identifies solutions and provides recommendations supporting organizational goals and objectives.
    • Utilizes relevant data, scholarship, and student development theories/models when planning and developing programs and services designed to foster and support student learning and growth.
    • Prepares reports, presentations and other related materials for campus and program stakeholders.

  • Proficient in the use of personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets and database software.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student development, human relations, management, educational leadership or related field.
  • 7 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education or Learning and Organizational Development
  • Experience developing and implementing co-curricular programs for college students.
  • Experience in assessment of programs and activities with a focus on learning outcomes.
  • Experience leading, supervising, and developing professional staff members.
  • Experience working with diverse individuals.
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring, and facilitating leadership development for individuals at various stages of their academic and professional careers.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Requirements

  • Doctoral degree
  • 8 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, student affairs/student administration
  • Experience working with college students, student leaders, and student organizations
  • Experience with fiscal management and budget development
  • Experience assessing programmatic needs, creating/developing recommendations, and successfully implementing new initiatives.
  • Experience delivering programs to remote/online participants.
