Job Description
The Cardiac Surgery First Assist position is part of the cardiac group, providing first assist services to patients system wide. Cardiac experience is highly preferred. Travel to/from CMC and other locations to provide case coverage is expected. RNFA, PA-C or SA will be considered.
\n\nThe Cardiac Surgery First Assist works under the direction and supervision of the attending physician to provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate the needs of the surgical patient during the perioperative period. The First Assist will 1st and/or 2nd assist cardiac surgical procedures. The First Assist will cover regional call to support the Cardiac Surgery program across the system as well as covering call for transplant, both donor and recipient, which requires the ability to travel in cars, ambulances, planes and helicopters. Displays knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body while delivering safe patient care. Establishes and maintains a safe perioperative environment. Offers education development opportunities to nursing staff, students and any other appropriate persons in the specific surgery and patient management. Utilizes ongoing data collection and follow up information to aid in research care studies that promote effectiveness and quality of patient care.
\n\nEducation/Expertise:
\n\nSurgical Assistant-Graduation of approved SA Program (or 10 years recent experience in first assisting in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic procedures will be accepted in lieu of formal SA education)
\n\n-or-
\n\nRNFA-Graduation of approved RN Program. Completion of state approved RNFA course.
\n\n-or-
\n\nPhysician Assistant-Graduation of approved PA Program. NCCPA.
\n\nRequired Credentials, Licensure or Certification (i.e. RN, RRT):
\n\nSurgical Assistants-Current National Certification (or 10 years recent experience in first assisting in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic procedures will be accepted in lieu of certification)
\n\n-or-
\n\nRNFA-Current Ohio RN licensure (ACLS desired); CNOR certification (CRNFA desired); RNFA registration with OBN
\n\n-or-
\n\nPhysician Assist must possess license from Ohio State Medical Board
\n\nExperience & Knowledge:
\n\n· Experienced cardiac assistants preferred. Will consider new grads.
\n\n· Must demonstrate proficiency in taking second call within 90 days.
\n\nPreferred Qualifications:
\n\n· 2 years of cardiac surgery experience as a Level 1
\n\n· Proficiency in taking first call
\n\n· 6 months taking second call for cardiac surgery service line
\n\n· Proficient in endoscopic vein harvesting
\n\n· Radial artery harvesting preferred
