Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive college health service providing fully accredited, primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty, and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical care and coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. UHS manages the student health insurance and workers' compensation insurance programs.

Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. The Social Services (SOS) unit offers short-term counseling, groups, case management and nutrition services to the campus student population. Counseling staff consists of social workers who provide compassionate specialty counseling on a range of specific and highly sensitive topics. Responsibilities

DIRECT CLIENT CARE
May include: regular phone or in-person/video client visits, responding to client-initiated contacts by phone or secure message, identification of client-centered solutions to overcoming barriers to care. Works with clients to develop a client-centered care plan, which may include employing various psychosocial and psychological techniques (e.g., behavioral activation, problem solving, goal setting, motivational interviewing and harm reduction techniques). Tracks clients who have not followed-up with treatment recommendations and works with CAPS providers and clients to determine the need for follow-up and barriers to treatment adherence.
CARE MANAGEMENT
Assists and supports CAPS by providing care management of clients, especially those requiring coordination of care between multiple UHS services (e.g. Psychiatry and Primary Care) and/or external providers (e.g. community therapists and psychiatrists) and campus resources and services (e.g. academics). Assists with monitoring and tracking clients as they navigate services within University Health Services. Works to provide referrals, care management, and assistance navigating UHS, campus, and off campus resources specific to students with chronic, persistent, and severe mental health issues.
COLLABORATION
Documents client progress, treatment recommendations, interventions and client response in the EHR and other required systems to facilitate the sharing of information and coordination of care with other involved providers. Participates in and coordinates regularly scheduled and clinically indicated ad hoc multidisciplinary consultation meetings with colleagues to discuss relevant aspects of client care and help to ensure positive client outcomes. Uses shared decision-making techniques to work proactively with the client around the care plan and communicates plan to the care team. Participates in regular care manager consultation meetings and regular caseload meetings with High Risk/Hospital Manager or Clinical Director. Functions as liaison to community mental health providers. Assists Referral Coordinator with developing and maintaining referral procedures and resources.
CARE MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT
Identifies improvements to systems, practices, and procedures and advocates recommendations to leadership. Works with High Risk/Hospital Manager, Clinical Director, Referral Coordinator, CAPS leadership, and CAPS staff to develop protocols aimed at improving care delivery for at-risk clients and support CAPS providers using such protocols. Develops, maintains, and shares internal UHS, campus, and community resources as appropriate with clients and staff to promote efficient quality care. Promotes the development of collaborative relationships with peers and other health professionals by articulating practice issues and communicating through appropriate organizational channels..
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Participates in staff meetings and meetings related to care management. Adheres to principles of quality, customer oriented standards. Demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions with clients and staff. When assigned, actively participates on UHS committees and/or the development of new programs/ideas. Is knowledgeable of client rights and responsibilities, rules of confidentiality and client privacy. Readily accepts additional responsibility including assisting with the evaluation of unit operation/efficiency. Maintains client records appropriately including confidentiality and completeness of notes. This includes written and electronic records. Is knowledgeable of UHS and campus departments, services, locations. Is knowledgeable of operational, administrative, business, and personnel policies. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability as health care practices and related technology change. Demonstrates an active investment in organizational and unit goals to improve customer service. Implements University and UHS policies and procedures to assure a consistently high level of client care, safety and customer service.

Required Qualifications
Experience in the assessment of and ability to work with high risk populations, including severe and complex mental health concerns. Advanced intervention skills, including care management and evidence-based psychosocial and psychotherapeutic approaches. Experience working with and commitment to addressing the needs of multicultural and marginalized populations. Effective verbal and presentation skills, computer literacy. Working knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct. Expertise working in a collaborative manner with diverse client groups, medical and mental health staff, and campus and community partners. Effective skills in communication, coordination and consultation. Working knowledge of young adult developmental and mental health issues including dual diagnoses.
Education
Masters in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Counseling
Licenses
Current California state license (LCSW , LMFT, LPCC) or ability to obtain a California license by position start date.
Preferred Qualifications
At least 3 years post-licensure. Experience working with multicultural and marginalized college student populations in university counseling. Working knowledge of electronic health records. Interest in continuing development of this new role. Working knowledge of college developmental and mental health issues including dual diagnoses.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, eligible for full UC benefits. This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $82,011.84 - $99,991.18 (Step 1.0 - 11.0).
