Position description

The Plant and Microbial Biology Department at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior Specialist in the lab of Rachel Brem, to study differences between mouse species in the axon extension behaviors of stem cell-derived neurons. The big-picture goal of the Brem lab is to understand the cellular and genetic basis of phenotypic differences between long-diverged species. The current project focuses on differences between species of the Mus genus in the growth and regeneration of axons from neurons, using stem cell models. The project is a collaboration between the Brem lab at UC Berkeley and the lab of James Dutton at the Stem Cell Institute of the University of Minnesota.

Responsibilities:
The incumbent will work with a Ph.D. level collaborator on experiments testing the hypothesis that stem cell derived neurons from mouse species differ with respect to axon extension, and for investigating the mechanistic basis. This will involve culturing induced pluripotent stem cells from multiple mouse strains and species; differentiating them into neurons; transcriptionally profiling neurons and stem cells; culturing neurons in Campenot chambers in a variety of conditions; imaging and quantifying neurite outgrowth. These experiments will be carried out under the supervision of senior collaborators. Likewise, data analysis will be done on a joint basis between the incumbent and senior mentors. The incumbent will keep detailed records of experiments performed and conclusions made, and will communicate results orally and through lab notebook records. Ultimately the incumbent will contribute to primary research manuscripts reporting the findings from the study.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in Bachelor's degree program (or international equivalent).

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
