Dept Marketing Statement
Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological services to diverse students on the UC Santa Cruz campus. Comprising a variety of Clinical Services, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Laboratory, and X-ray, SHS also has an onsite retail pharmacy, offering both prescriptive pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter products. Other SHS departments include CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP) and the Condom Co-op; Patient Support Services, and Student Insurance Programs. Student Health Services employs approximately 120 staff including Physicians, Lab Scientists, Pharmacists, Nurses, Radiologists, and other clinical and administrative staff. Student Health Services (SHS) values staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Lab Manager, the Certified Phlebotomist performs a wide variety of patient care support services in the Laboratory. The job requires the ability to work with a variety of clinicians with different styles and requirements. The ability to be flexible, maintain a professional demeanor, work closely with many people, and multi-task are critical components. In a fast-paced environment with many direct patient-care duties as well as clerical duties, attention to detail is essential. Working with ill students and concerned parents requires empathy and understanding. Patient confidentiality in all verbal and written communications is paramount. Critical thinking and ability to recognize and respond to emergencies are required.

JOB DUTIES
60% - Laboratory Support

Performs phlebotomy.

Assists the Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) with patient specimen collection, processing and analysis.

Operates and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory instruments, including urine dipstick analyzer, and centrifuges as well as preparation of specimens for microscopy, microbiological cultures or send-out to a reference laboratory.

Instructs patients in specimen collection and dispenses appropriate containers.

Maintains working levels of laboratory supplies.

Constantly performs multiple tasks; simultaneously serving several clinicians, monitoring patients, and managing phones and paperwork.

Handles medical specimens for transport.

Utilizes tact, discretion and confidentiality in all communications with staff, students, families, and outside medical services.

Identifies self by name and title in all communications and appropriately refers issues beyond scope of practice to laboratory or supervisory personnel.

20% - Patient Testing

Independently, after thorough training and competency testing, performs pre-analytic testing of patient specimens for hematology (complete blood counts), urinalysis, and pregnancy testing after daily controls have been performed by the CLS.

10% - Clerical Tasks

Assists CLS in preparation of monthly statistical reports.

Maintains a log of laboratory results for all testing departments and alpha filing system of laboratory reports.

Generates billing forms as needed and reviews them for completeness and accuracy.

Audits monthly reference laboratory billing.

Answers telephone calls, takes complete messages as appropriate and acts on them in a timely manner.

Provides quality assurance by keeping records of outgoing lab work and returned results, researches problems and contacts reference lab when results are not available.

Utilizes proprietary computer program, Point and Click as well as the Laboratory Information System, Orchard/Harvest, to access patient information and billing system.

10% - Maintenance of Laboratory Work Area

Maintains general cleanliness and order of laboratory by general and special cleaning according to infection control guidelines.

Responsible for maintaining working levels of test reagents, forms and phlebotomy supplies.

Maintains inventory of all forms.

  • Ability to work under pressure with time constraints and frequent interruptions, with minute attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on several tasks concurrently with frequent interruptions; Ability to organize and prioritize a high-volume workload and function independently.
  • Ability to handle difficult, sensitive and confidential situations tactfully and with discretion.
  • Demonstrated understanding of medical terminology.

Special Conditions
  • Current Certification from the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II
  • Selected Candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre hire criminal history background check and a pre hire credentialing check prior to formal offer of employment
  • Must complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act) training within 30 days of hire
  • Must possess or obtain a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate within 90 days of hire
  • Ability to work a minimum of two days per month
  • Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years
  • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; Current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
