To learn more about the university click here http://www.uchicago.edu/ Department PSD Computer Science: Administration and Staff About the Department Techstaff is the front line of defense for computer security and oversees all systems engineering/administration needs in the Department of Computer Science. The Department of Computer Science is an academic department that has a rich history of advancing and defining new fields of discovery in the physical sciences and computer science, and this tradition continues today. Our inquiry and impact spans from the edge of theory to human-computer interaction to Data Science. We are part of the Physical Sciences Division which includes departments and several interdisciplinary research institutes and centers. Job Summary The job designs automated, scalable, and rapidly deployable solutions to infrastructure development and server configuration. Works independently to install, configure, and maintain operating systems. Uses best practices and systems knowledge to monitor and alert systems, utility software, and firewalls. Guides maintenance for production servers as well as Windows and Linux servers. Responsibilities Performs system and network administration functions independently, with an understanding of the interactions between hardware, operating system software, and network operations and the design and administrative requirements to ensure an efficient, reliable, secure infrastructure. Assigns personnel to various projects, directs their activities, and evaluates their work. Ensures long-term requirements of systems operations and administration are included in the overall information systems planning of the organization. Analyzes system logs and identifies potential issues with computer systems. Performs recovery procedures, scheduling, and backups, and monitors batch processes. Plans for, and installs, necessary patches, upgrades, and vendor recommended maintenance for servers and their associated storage, network, communications, and peripheral sub-systems. Installs and maintains an appropriate level of intrusion detection, monitoring, and auditing software as required, adhering to both security and operational policies. Configures systems and their components to maximize performance and compatibility while minimizing costs, contention, or inference with other systems. Develops, implements, and maintains diagnostic procedures to ensure high level production quality, reliability, and availability. Monitors applications, operating systems, various other components, and end user services. Recommends, installs, and maintains appropriate levels of hardware and software firewalls associated with specific server implementations. Assists in the development, implementation, compliance tracking, and maintenance of documentation such as; hardware, software and service inventories and management reports. Administers operating systems, maintains security, and implements backup procedures for the organization's information systems and peripheral equipment, such as servers, desktops, printers, and storage devices. Configures, installs, upgrades, and maintains server applications and hardware. Works to safeguard the integrity of computer software. Implements operating system enhancements that will improve the reliability and performance of the system. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. --- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline. --- Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Technical Skills or Knowledge: Experience managing networked servers and workstations with knowledge of TCP/IP network services, system utilities, hardware installation, and OS installation. Experience in a multi-platform network environment including mail service and client support, backup and restore technologies, Macintosh and PC communication software support, and various graphical user interfaces. Direct work experience with Linux operating systems. Experience with research technologies including SLURM. Client and web server administration experience. Microsoft Exchange- Mailbox management experience. Experience with standard programming languages such as Python, Ruby, C, C , and Bash shell scripting. Preferred Competencies Expertise with system administration issues in a large and complex client server environment. Knowledge of configuration and management of clusters. Knowledge of backup technology and other monitoring and automated systems management technologies. Knowledge of the Linux operating system. Knowledge of Proxmox virtualization. Knowledge of Puppet configuration management. Knowledge of integration and management issues in a heterogeneous computing environment. Understanding of intruder techniques and software exploitation methods. Outstanding deductive and investigative skills to identify and diagnose complex, non-intuitive technical problems. Ability to apply in-depth knowledge and experience of internal or external business issues to improve products or services. Ability to take a new perspective using existing solutions. Ability to learn new procedures, techniques, and approaches quickly. Ability to effectively assist and train members of all levels of ability. Integrity and credibility to work with sensitive data. Knowledge of the department's primary business function.
