Duties and Responsibilities- *The Director of Diversity Initiatives (DDI) will develop programs related to research, education, and community engagement activities to lead diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives at SOEST for both students and employees. This position will report to the SOEST Dean.
- *Responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing policies and strategies to cultivate a respectful and collaborative learning and working environment throughout SOEST, and establishing equity, inclusion, and a Native Hawaiian place of learning as core values in all activities to promote and celebrate diversity.
- *Responsible for leading, creating, implementing, and tracking outcomes of policies. Develops and implements strategies to increase the proportional representation of students, faculty, and staff through recruitment and retention strategies of Native Hawaiian and other historically underserved populations, to better match those of the available pools of talent.
- Builds a community that openly embraces and celebrates all forms of diversity, culture, and accessibility including establishing relevant relationships within the local community, fostering inclusive teaching and advising practices, and guiding others in proper engagement conducting research within the state.
- *Informs and advises SOEST on trends, challenges, and successes regarding diversity, civility, and equal opportunity within the school.
- *Leads and advises all SOEST community members through the SOEST Diversity Equity and Inclusion Council fostering a culture of inclusivity, professionalism, trust, respect, transparency, and communication.
- *Chairs the SOEST Diversity Equity and Inclusion Council and represents SOEST on various University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM)-wide campus executive management level Diversity/EEO/Native Hawaiian Learning/ LGBTQ committees to align SOEST and UHM diversity, equity and inclusion and Native Hawaiian place of learning strategic plans.
- *Designs and implements methods to increase engagement and active participation of all SOEST communities in DEI initiatives, including but not exclusive of: create, communicate and enforce DEI-related personnel policies and guidelines; create tools, guidelines, and solutions to help the school maintain a diverse, welcoming, and connected environment.
- *Establishes goals, benchmarks and metrics and collaborates with other offices to ensure effectiveness of DEI strategies and initiatives, including but not exclusive of: analyzing data to help identify trends, insights and gaps to inform strategy; and measuring and reporting the impact of DEI programs using both qualitative and quantitative methods.

- Possession of a bachelor’s degree in diversity and inclusion leadership, business administration, human resources, history, sociology, psychology, social sciences, earth or ocean sciences, public administration or related field and 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for diversity, equity, and inclusion; or equivalent education/training or experience.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
- Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
- For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
- Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing, implementing and managing successful strategic activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with data collection, management and analysis
- Demonstrated knowledge of the history and societal impacts of social discrimination and unequal opportunity in Hawai’i and the continental US, and how this influences demographic patterns and opportunity in higher education.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in program development, including effective interaction with leadership and grassroots/local organizations and skills to develop protocols to facilitate such interaction
- Master’s or Doctorate degree in a relevant field, or JD.
- Experience and success in a strategic leadership role related to graduate education, equity and inclusion, and student success.
- Significant expertise and a deep understanding of the graduate student experience and sensitivity to student needs and concerns.
- Demonstrated interest in their own continued professional development concerning DEI
- Demonstrated successful proposal development and budget management.
- Relevant research & Publication record on DEI
