Position Summary Information

Be a Tar Heel!
This Employment Services Professional position is located in the Triangle of North Carolina. Our main offices are located at 720 Martin Luther King, Jr Blvd in Chapel Hill, though most of our work is performed in the community. We provide employment related services to roughly 500 individuals on the autism spectrum in competitive employment that are spread all over the Triangle and surrounding communities. The candidate selected for this position will work with the autism population, employers, families, and the rest of our dedicated team to help people realize their career goals. Join us and be a member of one of the best, if not the best, autism specific employment program in the world.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The TEACCH Autism Program began in 1972 as a system of university-based regional centers to serve children, adolescents, and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)and their families. As part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the program has an active clinical, teaching, and research program. TEACCH operates seven community regional clinics across the state. Each center offers a set of core services along with unique demonstration programs meeting the needs of individuals with ASD, and their families, and professionals across the state of North Carolina. Also, part of TEACCH are the Carolina Living and Learning Center, a residential/vocational training facility for autistic adults as well as an Employment Supports program providing Job Coaching and related services to adults on the spectrum. TEACCH is part of the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program and faculty are actively involved in student and professional training activities within the state, nation, and across the world. All TEACCH programs are coordinated through a central administration and research unit in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. TEACCH provides clinical services such as diagnostic evaluations, parent training and parent support groups, social play and recreation groups, individual counseling for individuals with ASD and supported employment. In addition, TEACCH conducts training nationally and internationally and provides consultation for teachers, residential care providers, and other professionals from a variety of disciplines. Research activities include psychological, educational, and biomedical studies.

Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to assist individuals, who have an autism spectrum diagnosis, to meet employment needs. This position further involves coordination of responsibilities involving planning program services/activities, monitoring, evaluating and modifying program activities; and developing resources.

As part of the TEACCH and Employment Services philosophy, all staff members including administrative staff members will work directly with adults with autism as part of their job. This position is not center based, and all services are provided in the community. We are required to travel great distances, sometimes at a moment’s notice. Individuals in this position are required to work alone in the community providing supports to autistic adults.

In addition to working with autistic adults, we work closely with the other support systems of the individual. This includes but is not limited to, additional family members, employers, other provider agencies, medical staff, residential providers, and local mental health agencies and other providers of funding for the services provided by TEACCH Employment Services. As a result, members of the staff must display good communication skills to maintain positive relationships with the community at large.

This position works with a local school system to provide: 1) assessments for all students in the nonstandard course of study, 2) Vocational Counseling to all students, and 3) develop internship opportunities for the students in the community. In any given year, there are 80-120 students receiving services and in various stages of this process. With 4 people in this role a typical position would have a case load of of 20-30 students. Access to each student varies and makes strong organization and documentation a must. Self-organization to complete all these activities must consider the school’s required classroom education for each student and requires a lot of coordination between teachers, transition facilitators, administration, transportation, families/caregivers, and community-based employers. They write up the numerous services they provide and give feedback to multidisciplinary teams and family members of students to help guide the student’s educational services. Their case load changes from month to month as students go in and out of various service components and have changes in schedule. They coordinate their schedules with those of the school to maximize contact hours. They perform all their duties with minimal to no supervision. They must write up paperwork to ensure the deliverables are billable to the school system and meet requirements of documentation for Vocational Rehabilitation Pre-Employment Transition Services.
