The Meruelo Family Center for Career Development ("CCD") prepares students for lifelong career readiness through innovative and tailored programs, services, and strategic partnerships.

The Assistant Director for Government, Policy & Law Careers ("assistant director") strategically advances student awareness and preparation for career paths in government, public policy and law fields. The assistant director provides counseling and leadership of specific student programming initiatives in areas including, but not limited to: government, public policy and law. The assistant director will also serve a the university's pre-law advisor for all students. The assistant director will actively collaborate with faculty from all colleges to develop programs which improve student preparation for careers in the government, public policy and law sectors.

The assistant director is a collaborative partner across all functions in the CCD, in particular the employer and regional engagement functions. The assistant director will stay abreast of current industry trends and utilize data to inform student needs and programming.

CAREER COUNSELING
Conducts individual and group student appointments related to all career development topic needs, while serving as an industry focus leader. Advises students on various career paths, skills development, and behavioral and technical mock interviewing. Connects with career counseling colleagues within the department to successfully partner on programs, workshops, and other career events.

PROGRAM COORDINATION
Cultivates, leads, and develops student-led groups across government, public policy and law-related career paths of interest for students. Provides leadership to an array of student programming (career treks, networking events, industry nights, etc.) in conjunction with industry expertise areas, and other related topics of student interest. The assistant director serves as the advisor to the Pre-Law Student Board, a Center for Career Development initiative supporting students seeking to enter the field of law. The assistant director will also serve as a central campus resource for students interested in pursuing law school. This role also oversee the annual Law School Fair.

EMPLOYER AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT
Collaborate with Employer Engagement and Regional Engagement Teams and other University partners to cultivate a network of alumni and employers to support programing efforts (e.g. technical mock interviews, speaker series, collaboration with student club initiatives, etc.). Build relationships with employers to learn about industry trends, recruiting timelines and processes, career paths, and student preparation.

COLLEGE ENGAGEMENT
Builds relationships with faculty to increase the number of students utilizing CCD resources and securing internships and full-time roles. This includes, but is not limited to, collaboration with departments to generate content for department-specific newsletters, supporting requests from all colleges for specialized programming, and continued relationship building to identify and secure outcomes with strategic employer partners.

SUPPORT OF CENTRALIZED EFFORTS
Participates in regular career counseling meetings and large departmental events, maintains up to date appointment notes, and provides leadership in industry focus areas. Covers walk-in hours and offer negotiation appointments. Participates in major departmental programming (career fairs, networking events, orientation programs, etc.). Represents the Center for Career Development across campus and in professional associations/community organizations. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director to ensure the success of the Center for Career Development, the University, our students, and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree
  • Knowledge of government, public policy and law related career paths
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated proficiency in building relationships
  • Ability to think organizationally, conceptually, and strategically
  • Ability to manage projects and relationships simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Serve as a team player with a positive attitude across multiple departments with distinct responsibilities
  • Understanding and support of Notre Dames mission



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Established network of professional contacts in the governmental, public policy and law related fields
  • Experience as a career counselor or coaching of college students
  • Experience working with recruiters in the government, public policy and law industries
  • Knowledge of higher education career services
  • 3-4 years of related work experience in government, public policy and/or law
