They listen to patients and families with a professional and caring attitude; ensure needs are being met; respect patient confidentiality; educate patients on medical procedures or conditions; keep patient records up to date; and act as a liaison between the patient and healthcare personnel through effective communication. Must have high energy level, flexibility, and a desire to learn.Responsibilities Provide exceptional customer service utilizing higher-level problem-solving techniques to further the patient's overall health and well-being via specialty care referrals. Obtain all necessary information via the patient record to ensure efficient processing of referrals. Documents all referral processing steps throughout multiple stages, care coordination interactions with patients and providers. Resolve pre-authorization, registration, or other referral-related issues prior to a patient's appointment. Contact patients verbally or via patient portal per current protocol. Uphold and complete referrals ensuring that the entire referral process is complete. Maintain updated referral resources. Ensure that documentation is completed in Athena EMR so that referrals can be done in a timely manner giving access to needed services in an appropriate timeframe and thus meeting the patient needs for access to services. Help patients navigate insurance claims and work to create payment plans where necessary. Provide response and assistance to patients via electronic multi-media requests (email, chat, web, etc.) in a collaborative and respectful manner. Obtains medical records as needed in accordance with UT Health Austin guidelines. Identify and obtain medical authorizations working with insurance payers and program facilitators. Verify patient insurance in accordance with UT Health Austin guidelines. Assist patient with scheduling appointments, review details and expectations about referrals with patients. Establish and maintain relationships with identified service providers. Meet with patients and families regarding treatments, procedures, medications, and continuing care. Obtain prior authorizations for visits, procedures, imaging, and medications. Navigates all contacts appropriately using various software tools and electronic technology methods. Applies use of department manuals and reference tools. Under general supervision, exercises some discretion, makes routine decision based on existing scheduling guidelines. Meet with the care team to assist with setting goals for quality assurance and best practices. Maintain organized confidential client material and appointment tracking. Provide community resources and referrals for continuing care. Assist in locating funding for special procedures or other patient needs. Perform other duties as assigned.Required QualificationsHigh School Diploma, prefer some college, previous patient care experience in ophthalmology. Knowledge and experience with EMRs. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. Excellent communication and organization skills. Must have high energy level, flexibility, and a desire to learn.Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.Salary Range$45,000 depending on qualificationsWorking Conditions May work around standard office conditions.
