The University of Virginia Department of Intramural Recreational Sports offers a wide variety of programs, services, and venues where students, faculty and staff feel welcome and safe, can find meaningful connections, and have support developing all dimensions of wellness. We are seeking a Facility Operations Manager/Assistant Manager for the Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) who supports this mission. Reporting to the Facility Director, this position provides managerial oversight for daily operations, program and event support, as well as direct supervision and development of student employees.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directly oversees and manages the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, supervision, evaluation, and scheduling of 65 part-time student employees; assures student staff are fully trained on emergency response plans, operations, program support, reservation support, and seamless service.
- Serves as administrator for unit staffing software programs that assure shift integrity, communication, schedules, shift preparedness, and operational fluency.
- Ensures all student supervisors have current CPR and First Aid certifications as required; coordinates and teaches staff certification courses as needed.
- Continually assesses staffing systems for effectiveness, service quality, consistency, and staff execution towards position descriptions; adjusts, responds, trains, and improves systems according to continuous managerial presence and evaluation.
- Plans, schedules, and executes at least ten in-service training sessions per year in varying formats to develop effective staff teams.
- Reviews and supports a comprehensive facility risk management and compliance plan including policies, procedures, practices, and resources that follow industry standards, meets all applicable university, state, and local requirements; conducts formal and informal risk management and safety audits to assure facility service quality, access, and safety.
- Supports the AFC Director for unit fiscal and administrative responsibilities. Supports development of wage and operational budget. Supports effective implementation of practices in assessment, procurement, usage tracking, and overall stewardship of resources that are accurate and compliant.
- Assists and supports department programs including fitness classes, aquatic programs, intramural programs, university orientation, after hours programs, etc.
- Assists and supports Facility Director with operations and special events such as Graduation, Game Day events for football, inclement weather coverage, etc. which includes working some nights, weekends, and university holidays.
- Supports Facility Director in all maintenance and cleaning related oversight that assures APPA level standards for resources and space including indoor space, outdoor space, fitness equipment, etc.
- Supports the Facility Director with small project maintenance, facility improvement projects, workorders, and project management as designated.
- Work with University departments supporting programs and events as needed, ensuring compliance for university policies and regulations.
- Proactively supports partnerships and success of academic and non-academic organizations at the University.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/LICENSURE FOR A FACILITY OPERATIONS MANAGER/FACILITY OPERATIONS ASSISTANT MANAGER:

Manager: Bachelor's degree Bachelor's degree in sports management, recreation administration, physical education, exercise physiology, kinesiology, or related field and at least four years of relevant experience.

Assistant Manager: Bachelor's degree in sports management, recreation administration, physical education, exercise physiology, kinesiology, or related field. Relevant experience (four years' plus) may be considered in lieu of a degree and at least one year of relevant experience (without a degree, at least five years' experience).

Experience leading or overseeing a university-based recreation or fitness facility.
-
Direct supervisory experience of student staff in an educational setting.
-
Current CPR/AED certification.

Experience developing and administering a risk management/safety and/or emergency response plan for a recreation or fitness related facility.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in related field, or equivalent years of applicable professional experience

Multiple years of professional experience leading or overseeing a university-based recreation or fitness facility.

Multiple years of direct supervisory experience leading or overseeing a large part-time staff

Experience supporting large events and/or athletic practices or competitions

CPR/FA Instructor trainer

Working knowledge of When2Work, Connect2Concepts, Fusion Software.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to meet emergency action plan response roles

Ability to train and demonstrate operational skills to part-time staff

Ability to mobilize fluently to multiple indoor facility spaces.

Frequent movement, standing, and climbing stairs to access buildings and facilities in order to assess conditions and review facility projects. The position will require occasional light lifting, bending and stooping, in addition to the use of desktop computers in an office environment.

- Assistant Facility Manager: commensurate with education and experience.
- Facility Operations Manager: commensurate with education and experience.
