Job Summary

Supporting the mission of the Georgia Public Library Service, the PINES Cataloging Specialist performs expert level cataloging work on behalf of all Georgia libraries. Working as an OCLC member library with Enhanced Cataloging Status in three major formats, this position will perform original cataloging for PINES libraries for urgent cataloging issues or unusual types of materials. Continuing GPLS's commitment to excellence in the field, this position also participates in the Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) to create Name Authority Records (NARs). Supports PINES libraries with cataloging training (original and copy), evaluation of commercial vendors' eligibility to perform cataloging on behalf of PINES libraries, checking original catalogers' work, and answering expert-level cataloging questions. Serves as the PINES specialist for authorities issues.


Responsibilities

  • Performs original cataloging for member libraries when special urgent situations arise, or unusual types of materials need to be handled (20%)
  • Serves as an OCLC member library in cataloging with an Enhanced Cataloging Status in three major formats (books, video recordings, sound recordings). Also part of the LC-PCC group in creating Name Authority Records in the national bibliographic database (15%)
  • Provides expert level counsel to library staff regarding cataloging standards and practices. Checks new original catalogers' work (20%)
  • Prepares and conducts cataloging training of professional catalogers, including the mandatory copy-cataloging training, original cataloging training, and advanced subject/classification cataloging training (15%)
  • Participates in the evaluation of commercial vendors' cataloging ability and coordinates outsourcing procedures among PINES libraries, vendors and OCLC (5%)
  • Serves as the PINES specialist for authorities issues (10%)
  • Participates in the Evergreen open source community (10%)
  • Attends seminars, conferences, job-related training and other staff development training programs. May serve on committees and task forces (5%)

Required Qualifications

  • MLS (Master's in Library or Information Science)
  • 5 or more years experience working with library cataloging
  • State of Georgia Certification for Librarians
  • Experience with RDA, MARC21, OCLC WorldCat, WebDewey and other applicable cataloging standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Evergreen ILS
  • Experience with PINES policies and procedures
