What are the responsibilities and job description for the Network Engineer position at UNLV Health?

The Network Engineer primary responsibilities include working in collaboration with other IT staff to implement, design, operate and maintain the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV and UNLV Health enterprise network and cable plant infrastructure. The enterprise network is composed of routers, switches, firewalls, security appliances, wireless controllers, access points, broadband radios, and inside/outside cable plant infrastructure. This position will also provide support for DNS, DHCP, VPN, SYSLOG, TACACS,and other infrastructure related services. The network engineer will install, upgrade, configure, troubleshoot and support these and other networking components based on the defined network standards and procedures. This position will serve as a point of escalation for complex network connectivity issues requiring troubleshooting skills and an understanding of routing protocols. The person holding this position will consult with internal and external clients, as requested, to provide solutions to unique network requirements. The network engineer will participate in a weekly on-call rotation and respond to and schedule network outages outside of business hours.

Major Responsibilities

  • Resolve operational tickets and tasks in an online ticketing system. Take ownership of inquiries and assignments. Listen to customers and understand their needs. Provides updates for customers. Demonstrate an eagerness to help; help customers solve problems.
  • Operate and maintain the wired and wireless network to a high degree of reliability and security. Maintain the network routers, switches, network servers, wireless controllers, access points, low voltage data cable plant, and network services including but not limited to DNS, DHCP, NTP, Radius, and VPN. Activate network ports and services. Provide input to improve efficiency and quality of work process and operations.
  • Lead or collaborate with peers on the implementation and configuration of network infrastructure to facilitate a continuously scalable, secure and highly available network infrastructure. Based on the design, implement new network services and provide specification and installation for new and renovated facilities, including wired network systems, low voltage data cable plants, wireless overlays, integration with specialized network devices, power redundancy, and IDF room layout.
  • Focus on structured cable plant implementation. This includes copper and fiber cable plants supporting the data network and some design and implementation.
  • Create and update network diagrams and document network installation and change procedures. Document structured and fiber cable plant infrastructures.
  • Maintain knowledge base documentation. Develop work instructions for network operations.
  • Provide input and relay project information and status to the supervisor. Provide relevant input to project discussions and meetings.
  • Enforce IT policies, standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Maintain respectful and constructive communications with vendors, contractors, and colleagues.
  • Be familiar with basic operations of the school and UNLV Health in order to serve customers effectively.
  • Build positive relationships with various campus units as a representative of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine IT Department.
  • Functions effectively in a Matrix Management environment.
  • Completes any duties and special assignments as requested.

Experience, Education, And Certifications

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in IT, Network Administration, and/or related field required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, and/or related field required or Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology plus two (2) years of experience in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), or equivalent certification preferred

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Qualifications

  • Knowledge of LAN switching technologies, routing technologies, wireless infrastructure, network infrastructure services such as DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc., and network infrastructure maintenance and operation
  • Proficient with networking components (routers, switches, firewalls, access points, wireless controllers, unified communication), network protocols and technology (e.g. OSPF, MPLS, IPv4, IPv6, FHRP)
  • Knowledge with structured cabling system and outside cable plant
  • Knowledge and experience with configuration and troubleshooting networking components
  • Knowledge and experience with installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of wireless access points, wireless management systems and associated technologies
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with team members and customers and resolve conflicts in a positive and constructive manner
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) and Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, etc)
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey ideas clearly to others
  • Must be able to develop and deliver oral briefings or presentations at meetings of peers within the unit to communicate technical knowledge and new information.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to multitask and prioritize work in a fast paced environment
  • Must be able to pay close attention to details
  • Must be able to promote, adapt, establish, and adhere to, and enforce best practices and procedures
  • Must be able to deal with complex problems and apply appropriate tools, data, and techniques to diagnose and develop solutions.
  • Must be available to serve in an on-call rotation for unexpected emergencies and work extended shifts
  • Must be willing to adjust shift schedule to perform maintenance and upgrades outside of business hours a minimum of once per week
  • Must be able to learn technologies through research and self-studies and share knowledge with others in the units

Physical Requirements

  • May include standing, sitting, and/or walking for extended periods
  • May include performing repetitive tasks
  • May include working on a special schedule (i.e. evenings and weekends)
  • May include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects/network equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds frequently
  • May include lifting network equipment that weighs up to 45 pounds occasionally
