SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE
The Director of World Cup Events will work with the Director of Events to manage U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s elite event properties. This will include leadership and management of all of U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s FIS World Cup events (Alpine, Freestyle and Nordic). In addition, the Event Director will work with Department staff to organize other elite event properties including, World Championships, National Championships and other elite U.S. Ski & Snowboard events.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Event Management
- Develop and implement an annual World Cup Business Plan
- Build planning timeline, negotiate internal and OC deadline
- Manage against contractual deadline
- Manage business relationship with sites, defining seasonal and long term objectives
- Work with TA’s, and VP to discuss long term investment and infrastructure planning
- Manage an annual budget of approximately $2.5 million.
- Create preliminary budgets for planning process
- Manage event expenses
- Complete monthly budget updates
- Reconcile budget to actual expenses at end of financial year
- Comprehensive management of all major World Cup events (in concert with the Local Organizing Committees) including:
- Planning: Define and agree to planning timeline (see above)
- Budgeting: Review sign off on OC Budget and manage against the financial commitments
- Competition management. Review and sign off on World Cup and Nationals schedules.
- Hospitality - Build hospitality plan with Marketing and Foundation goals in mind.
- Entertainment - Define Entertainment plan with OC.
- Media service - Define media/PR objectives with OC and PR Director, write PR plan with OC Chief of press. Help negotiate special PR activities such as public team announcement press conferences.
- Oversee event organization and manpower including
- Development of Organizing Committees: Advise on recruitment of key positions (chiefs of course, event managers) and sign off on OC structure.
- Assignment of Officials: Work with FIS and Comp Services on assignment of officials. Oversee the confirmation of competition vendors as required.
- Strategy – Work with the Director of Events to oversee and manage long term strategy for bidding, site development, budgets, personnel, etc.
- Liaison for FIS Race Directors (International Ski Federation) for Alpine and Freestyle disciplines, to ensure the fulfillment of FIS contractual requirements and rules relating to World Cups.
- Prepare for site visits with FIS Director’s and OC and set agenda.
- Work with OC on preparing FIS checklists and get them signed off
- Get FIS Contracts signed by OC and USSA
- Work with the Director of Events on communication about snow control, FIS prize money exchange, and any commercial obligations such as bib designs.
- Manage and supervise Event Manager in the development and implementation of:
- Event hospitality plans including: Sponsor entertainment, lodging, F&B, ceremonies, etc.
- Event promotions and media relations including: media service (staffing and facilities), host broadcast facilities, local and national PR and marketing campaigns, community relations, etc.
- Manage and Oversee Venue Operations / Sports Production Management Element
- Venue Development: Work with Director of Event Operations and TA on venue layout, permanent and temporary infrastructure
- Work with TA’s to build a course preparation plan and oversee the implementation of the plan. Understand FIS requirements and issues with competition and oversee the resolution of those issues.
- Broadcast: Facilitate communication between host broadcaster(s) and host Organizing Committee on broadcast operations plan
- Determining venue layout on advice from TA and Director of Venue Operations
- Coordination contractual requirements of venue equipment with Director of Event Operations and Event Marketing Coordinator
- Ensure that the allocation of Event Operations resources meets the contractual requirements of the event property.
- Oversee the delivery of the Sport Production plan for each event.
Event Administration
- Work with the Director of Events to negotiate bids and finalize written Event Agreements with event venues, organizers, and vendors. In addition, work with venues, organizers and vendors to insure successful and positive event partnerships.
- Work with the Director of Events to produce post event reports, analysis and reporting on an annual basis.
- Provide support to the Director of Events to manage USSA/FIS issues including FIS calendars, rules, formats, and meetings.
Special Projects
- Work under the direction of the Director of Events on specific non-annual special projects including but not limited to:
- Planning and delivery of USSA operated hospitality houses
- Planning and delivery of USOPC Olympic Trials and other USOPC owned properties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Incumbent will be required to attend specific US Ski and Snowboard events and work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions.
- Within USSA, employee will work directly with all Events Department staff as well as staffs of the Athletic, Marketing/Sales and PR Departments.
- Externally, employee will work with event organizers, resort owners, local organizing committees, industry partners, International Ski Federation (FIS) representatives, and USSA officials & volunteers.
COMPETENCIES & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 5-7 years experience managing major events and/or large operational projects.
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience negotiating contracts or agreements.
- Minimum education of a Bachelor Degree.
- Experience managing international sporting events including World Cups, World Championships and/or Olympic Games.
- Experience and familiarity with USSA and FIS programs.
- Ability to ski at an intermediate/advanced level.
- Proven experience managing budgets in excess of $1 million.
- Proven leadership, management and administration skills as demonstrated through experience and references.
- Mature demeanor with experience in personnel management.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to set and achieve goals.
- Computer competency including internet, spreadsheets, word processing and presentations.
- Ability to travel.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Director of World Cup Events manages and oversees - “Event Manager” to ensure delivery of sub elite events and support administrative duties of the World Cup and Events Department.
- Manages and oversees Event Operations staff and contractors on site at events
