What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Pharmacy - FT position at USPI?
The Department Director is responsible for all departmental functions in support of the hospital's mission, vision, and facility goals. The Director identifies the cost-effective systems needed to support the business of the department taking into account business trends, resource availability, and changes in customers. This position establishes effective working relationships with all constituencies, including patients, physicians, employees, volunteers, and vendors. The Director identifies and remedies through continuous customer satisfaction data and employee involvement. The Department Director works with Senior Management to meet Facility goals.
Responsibilities:
- Meets all required deadlines. Demonstrates discretionary ability in establishing priority.
- Oversees the pharmacy to ensure that patients’ pharmaceutical needs are effectively met.
- Establishes policies, procedures, standards, and objectives for the provision of services and coordinates with other departments to provide maximum level of service to patients.
- Performs an annual review of all pharmaceutical policies and procedures for the purpose of establishing their consistency with current practices within the hospital, compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations, and good Pharmaceutical care.
- Establishes pricing structures for pharmaceutical services and products. Initiates a monitors systems to ensure proper storage conditions for all pharmaceutical items.
- Establishes drug quality specifications for drugs to be purchased. Establishes a means of identifying the signatures and Drug Enforcement Administration numbers of all practitioners authorized to use the pharmaceutical services for ambulatory care patient prescriptions.
- Provides prescribed medications, drugs and other pharmaceuticals as needed for adequate patient care according to professional standards and practices.
- Demonstrates good leadership by developing standards of performance, determining areas of responsibility and accountability and delegating authority to various department staff members.
- Establishes and evaluates standards of care. Assures compliance with JCAHO. Medicare and other applicable regulatory agency requirements.
- Financial Performance/Operating Indicators: Total operating expenses per stat. Volume generated; Revenue integrity; Department specific indicators
Role Responsibilities:
The pharmacist must be registered by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy to practice pharmacy in the state of Texas. The Texas Pharmacy Act governs the practice of pharmacy and defines it as:
- providing an act or service necessary to provide pharmaceutical care;
- interpreting or evaluating a prescription drug order or medication order;
- participating in drug or device selection as authorized by law, and participating in drug administration, drug regimen review, or drug or drug-related research;
- providing patient counseling;
- being responsible for:
- dispensing a prescription drug order or distributing a medication order;
- compounding or labeling a drug and device other than by a manufacturer,
- repackager, or distributor of a nonprescription drug or commercially packaged prescription
- properly and safely storing a drug or device; or
- maintaining proper records for a drug or device;
- performing for a patient a specific act of drug therapy management delegated to a pharmacist by a written protocol from a physician licensed in this state in compliance with Subtitle B; or administering an immunization or vaccination under a physician's written protocol.
Required Skills:
- Five (5) years of hospital pharmacy experience is preferred.
- Have two years of experience in a supervisory capacity.
- The pharmacist must be registered by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy to practice pharmacy in Texas.
- Demonstrate competent administrative, leadership, and management, demonstrating knowledge of the development needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Must have NICU experience or complete NICU training within 90 days of employment.
- Knowledge of TJC and Medicare standards affecting pharmacy and medication management.
- Must possess the ability to prioritize responsibilities and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to deal tactfully with all personnel, medical staff, and the public.
- Possess the ability to make independent decisions.
- Must have the ability to act as a liaison between personnel and management.
