UTEC is seeking to hire a leader who will help UTEC further strengthen its own internal work advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The DEI Director will develop, implement, and monitor programs that promote equity within the organization and will help implement the recommendations of a new external equity audit. This person will be responsible for developing training and initiatives to create and foster an open and inclusive environment, in addition to partnering with Human Resources (HR) for support and implementation of diversity-related issues and activities.

The DEI role will bring forward- thinking leadership, deep insights and strategic thinking while partnering successfully with leaders across the agency to achieve desired results. Serving young adults throughout Merrimack Valley (Lowell, Lawrence and Haverhill), UTEC was founded in 1999 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young adults (ages 17-25) overcome the very real challenges of poverty, gang involvement, unemployment. UTEC reaches 500 youth annually through an evidence-based model aimed at reducing recidivism while increasing education and employment attainment.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing and executing diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies for the organization
  • Begin implementation of the current DEI goals and strategies, including ongoing coordination in partnership with our external equity consultants around UTEC’s DEI Committee (a working group of about 10 staff)
  • Including regular meetings throughout the year, work with our external equity consultants to ensure annual accountability to our overall DEI work plan, and monitoring results identified through a survey process facilitated by the consultants
  • Work with YA’s advisory team to promote and advance DEI initiatives within the programming
  • Collaborate with HR and leaders on sourcing, hiring, and retaining diverse candidates by connecting with professional organizations and leveraging social media and community connections
  • Consult with existing team leaders to develop DEI action plans to best strengthen every team’s commitment to advancing DEI across the organization (both programming and administrative teams) and work to ensure progress is being made across team plans, helping to remove obstacles as may arise
  • Develop a system for ongoing training for all staff around DEI issues, and lead efforts to systemize professional development opportunities for all staff. This position will be responsible for coordinating training opportunities through the state’s Workforce Training Fund, in addition to other areas as well
  • Build strategic relationships within the community to ensure alignment and focus on diversity and inclusion in all practices. Responsible for outreach relationships with varied organizations to best advance DEI through partnerships, recruitment, training, or other areas
  • Partner with UTEC’s leadership team to integrate DEI into core decisions through the organization; Research and develop metrics for measuring and reporting on the effectiveness of diversity initiatives implemented and prepare quarterly reports to leadership on the value of the initiatives
  • Organize various activities for staff/young adults to celebrate the diverse cultures represented by UTEC
  • Keeps current on diversity programs and new initiatives in the field by maintaining contact with others (e.g., professional association and educational groups and professional development efforts); Develop programs to attract, retain, and promote a diverse workforce
  • Partner with other facilitators with respect to offering affinity group circles for interested staff
  • Assist with diversity analytics including tracking metrics, generating diversity reports to show trends and communicating impact across diverse programs and initiatives

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Exemplify our commitment to follow-through (strong project management skills, ensuring systems for all key tasks to be completed on time, even in the midst of varied distractions and possible disorganization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication along with presentation skills are required.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills required
  • Candidates must be collaborative and creative
  • Embracing the independence of this role, willingness to work within the grey areas, and handle the varied curveballs that may come about
  • Bilingual preferred
  • Willingness to acknowledge mistakes in a must, and a capacity to laugh at oneself is a BIG PLUS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work and life experience required
  • A minimum of 5 years of professional work experience with 3 years of DEI management experience. Minimum of 3 years experience with managing organizational diversity initiatives, or similar initiatives and ability to successfully engage in and manage community relationships required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Able to travel as needed

Salary/Benefits: Salary range of $65,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience.
