JOB TITLE:  

Mental Health Counselor (Multicultural Emphasis)

JOB PURPOSE:

The University of Wyoming’s (UWYO) Counseling Center (UCC) is hiring a Mental Health Counselor with expertise in providing culturally informed clinical services to diverse and historically marginalized university students (e.g., Black/African-American). This position is a 12-month position.

This position includes a robust benefits package, including a retirement contribution from the University. UCC will also provide professional development opportunities and reimburse for travel expenses. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and provide culturally informed, short-term/brief individual, group, and outreach services to diverse and historically marginalized student populations, including, but not limited to, Black/African-American, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) on UWYO’s campus. 
  • Participate in instructing, training, supervising, and evaluating graduate assistants and practicum students in culturally informed methods and procedures of counseling and assessment and educational interventions for alcohol and other drugs.
  • Provide workshops,  referrals, and crisis services during office hours and after-hours as needed—flexibility and readiness to provide outreach activities during non-office hours. 
  • As needed, to provide consultation to parents, faculty, and staff about mental health topics; provide presentations to various groups on campus on various mental health topics. 
  • As needed, liaise between the UCC and other offices within UWYO. 
  • Complete necessary and required clinical and administrative paperwork promptly and consistent with professional standards and office expectations. 
  • Attend administrative, training, and clinical meetings.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct counseling evaluations, assist in research, and prepare documents for the institution.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education: Master’s Degree in a mental health discipline; practicum experience working with diverse populations. 

Experience: 2 years work-related experience

Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:

  • Licensed mental health professional (e.g., Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Licensed Psychologist). Licensed or license-eligible in Wyoming.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Clinical expertise with Black, Latiné, Native American, and Asian young adults.    
  • College counseling experience.  
  • Experience creating education and outreach programming for minoritized populations. Training and expertise in providing culturally informed, short-term/individual, group counseling/therapy services to diverse and marginalized student populations.
  • A demonstrated commitment to advocacy for multiculturalism in counseling. 
  • Dedication to working as a team. 
  • Ability to manage conflict and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of and interest in providing supervision to trainees.     
  • To have high interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • To behave ethically (e.g., code of Ethics), maintain confidentiality, understand mental health assessment, experience with referrals to health providers (e.g., social worker), and rapport-building.
