JOB TITLE:
Lab Assistant - Microbiology
JOB PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is to provide identification of microorganisms that have infected chickpea, dry bean, grass seed, and sugar beet research trials being conducted at the Powell Research and Extension Center and surrounding areas. Additionally, many of our trials with chickpea, dry bean, and sugar beet require precise identification and/or quantification of disease incidence to assess the effects of various fungicide treatments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The lab assistant will be responsible for identifying and culturing microorganisms that are found on chickpea, dry bean, grass seed crops, and sugar beet plants. Additionally, the lab assistant will extract DNA from infected plant samples and run real-time PCR and/or other methods (e.g. KASP) in order to genotype the variants of the plant pathogen(s). Analysis of plant DNA to confirm presence or absence of disease-resistant genes in progeny breeding lines is also planned.
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position provides vital support to Powell Research and Extension Center customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work in Powell, WY.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
B.S. in microbiology and/or molecular biology.
Experience culturing microorganisms (e.g., bacterial and/or fungal plant pathogens) and identifying through conventional methods.
Demonstrated proficiency with extraction of plant and/or microbial DNA and performing real-time PCR for identification of variants.
