This is a full-time/non-exempt term position lasting six months to one year.

JOB SUMMARY:

A Laboratory in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology is in need of a Lab Manager position:

This particular position will focus on the molecular epidemiology of respiratory viral infections, especially in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts will comprise various molecular analyses of human respiratory specimens, in order to better ascertain the dynamics of person-to-person spread. Routine activities will include coordination and banking of such specimens; preparation of microbiology and molecular biology reagents; overseeing the performance of diagnostic instrumentation, and assisting other lab members in the design and execution of experiments.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

  • Develop work goals for the laboratory consistent with institutional and departmental goals and policy
    • Prepare laboratory work schedules;
    • Plan to achieve goals or establish priorities;
    • Initiate changes or develop new policies, procedures, and/or methods;
    • Provide leadership for the laboratory vision.
  • Ensure the most effective operation of the laboratory
    • Develop laboratory guidelines;
    • Maintain procedures manual;
    • Evaluate new reagents and equipment;
    • Perform administrative duties;
    • Supervise the production of routine to complex work of the laboratory;
    • Perform test experiment procedures relating to laboratory activities.
  • Ensure financial resources are utilized effectively
    • Indirect budgetary responsibility including budget preparation for approval by administration and monitor expenditures against the budget;
    • Anticipate the laboratory needs and order supplies;
    • Coordinate invoicing vs. work milestones for sponsor-funded research.
  • Ensure a safe, satisfying, and enriching environment for employees
    • Supervise technical staff, technologists, students and laboratory activities;
    • Coordinate, assign, and review work of others as it relates to laboratory activity;
    • Maintain personnel records and/or timesheets;
    • Monitor payroll reports for overtime, sick time, and vacation usage;
    • Ensure development of people through orientation and training programs and through work experiences;
    • Conduct performance reviews where applicable and ensure all other performance reviews are conducted in a timely manner;
    • Counsel employees with regard to disciplinary actions taken in response to violations of institutional policies or contractual provisions;
    • Initiate and/or recommend personnel actions, i.e., hiring, termination, etc.;
    • Conduct or originate staff meetings to develop resolutions to problems.
  • Evaluate quality assurance standards, programs, and procedures within the unit/laboratory
    • Ensure effective instrument/equipment use and quality control in the laboratory;
    • Ensure accuracy and reliability of tests/experiments.
  • Assist in Research and Development:
    • Develop new and modify existing methodology/protocols;
    • Perform, interpret and evaluate research;
    • Assemble and compile research data for presentation and/or publication;
    • Assist in collaborative efforts with other institutions and/or industry;
    • Critically review sponsor protocols.
  • Serve as a resource to others concerning technical problems/procedures
    • Consult with students, faculty, fellows, technologists, physicians, and/or clinicians about unusual and/or difficult technical problems;
    • Assist in performing and interpreting technical studies;
    • Serve as consultant on technical problems;
    • Instruct laboratory users on technical procedures.

Preferred Education, Skills, and Experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree required and 5 yrs relevant experience
  • Strong background in microbiology, ideally, clinical microbiology
  • Experience with diagnostic testing
  • Experience with molecular techniques
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to work independently, trouble-shoot and develop methods on own
  • Supervisory experience
