What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Scientist position at Venenum Biodesign, LLC?
Genesis Biotechnology Group (GBG) is a consortium of entities and institutes, in the fields of clinical diagnostic testing, drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, and biotechnology. Our mission is to improve the patient’s quality of life by linking basic science and the development of diagnostic and pre-clinical treatments.
Venenum Biodesign, a member of GBG, is seeking a Research Scientist or Team Leader in Discovery Biology to join our drug discovery team in Hamilton, NJ. The primary responsibilities include biochemical and cell-based assay development, and subsequent small molecule characterization to support early-stage drug discovery for a broad range of oncology and metabolic disease targets. The successful candidate will independently manage the technical and strategic needs of programs, work productively with junior and senior colleagues, and be able to adapt to the changing needs of an early-stage drug discovery company.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, validate, and implement biochemical and cell-based assays for high throughput screening, characterization of small molecule SAR, and mechanism of action studies.
- Collaborate with colleagues in medicinal chemistry and therapeutic area biology groups to design and execute a critical path for progression of small molecules from hit identification through lead optimization and demonstration of in vivo efficacy.
- Analyze and interpret complex data sets using curve fitting and database management software.
- Prepare oral and written reports for presentation of key findings to multidisciplinary project teams.
- Supervise the work of Research Associates engaged in all aspects of early-stage drug discovery.
- Interface with external clients to develop proposals, protocols, and timelines for project completion in alignment with client specification. Communicate written results within agreed-upon timeline and budget.
Requirements:
- For Research Scientist, candidates must have a Ph.D. in biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or related discipline with 2 years of post-graduate experience. To be considered for the Team Leader role, a Ph.D. with at least 5 years of experience is required.
- Experience developing biochemical and/or cell-based assays for characterization of small molecule inhibitors/activators, mechanism of action, and target engagement.
- As this is a laboratory-based position, recent hands-on laboratory experience in biochemistry and/or cell biology is required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Attention to detail with strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience coaching, mentoring, or leading direct reports in the completion of
abovementioned duties.
Preferred:
- Previous experience in small molecule early-stage drug discovery.
- Familiarity with ADMET concepts, pharmacokinetic modeling, and pharmacodynamics.
- Experience with a variety of biochemical and cell-based assay formats such as FI, FP, TR-FRET, luminescence, AlphaScreen, and luciferase reporter.
- Ability to propose and evaluate new drug discovery opportunities and technologies.
