Position Summary
Responsible for the coordination of specialty blood and cellular therapy products to meet patient/donor specific biomaterial needs, working independently under the direction of the Director of Biomaterials Operations, Principal Investigators (PIs) and other Versiti Leadership. This position is also responsible for collection of blood products for contract research and clinical trials along with the conversion of unused products and samples to biomaterials for research, education, and further manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Protect the rights and welfare of subjects participating in IRB approved human subject research at Versiti.
- Oversee coordination of all area study activities with external and internal resources to complete research aims.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and support Clinical Research Assistants to achieve department goals.
- Monitor and evaluate staff workloads and performance, resource appropriately.
- Participate in collection of blood products and/or lab samples for research protocols in coordination with other Versiti departments: * Participate in sponsor-led training and Site Initiation Visits (SIV) * Schedule contributors for product collection * Perform medical assessment, donor qualification, and donor education * Interpret History & Physical and lab results * Obtain informed consent for research donors * Communicate with biomaterial clients * Maintain accurate and complete donor records and files in coordination with study staff * Perform collection of blood products including, but not limited to, whole blood, apheresis blood products, and lab samples * Maintain communication and collaboration with Core Production, Hospital Services, CTRO, and study staff * Enter orders and ensure appropriate delegation of products * Maintain product collection competency * Maintain CITI Training competency including cGTP Training * Data entry
- Maintain CPR certification
- GENERAL DUTIES * Perform quality control on all supplies and equipment used in whole blood and apheresis product collections. * Maintain supply inventory. * Coordinate donor collection schedules with biomaterials clients. * Pack and ship products for delivery to clients. * Administer medication and vaccines related to research protocols, if licensed. * Provide off hours on call coverage for equipment alarms. * Communicate scheduling needs with internal and external customers. * Perform photocopying, faxing, filing, and scanning. * Assist in collection and recording of data for workload metrics. * Participate in Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement activities. * Provide training for new staff in job functions and provide continuing education to peers. * Maintains confidentiality of all applicable records including written and verbal communications. * Coordinates and runs meetings. * Provides insight for strategic plans to enhance existing services and influence resulting action plans. * Promotes a culture of collaboration within the team, company, and with external stakeholders.
- SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES * Responsible for the coaching, mentoring, and professional development of team members. * Oversees departmental procedures in accordance with all applicable blood center SOPs; local, state, and federal regulations and accrediting agencies for the safety of donors and the safety and quality of the blood supply. * Assures timely and adequate communications within and between departments. Demonstrates strong leadership behaviors. Encourages a culture of open and constructive communication. * Prepares agenda and leads departmental meetings. Actively participates in interdepartmental meetings for process improvement as applicable. * Anticipates and proactively solves problems to affect change, makes informed decisions. Qualifications
Education
- Associate's Degree required
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
Experience
- Training in phlebotomy required
- RN/LPN or equivalent experience with current state licensure. preferred
- Equivalent experience is defined as at least one year of acceptable performance in phlebotomy or lab related field. required
- Previous healthcare and leadership experience preferred
- Prior experience in phlebotomy required
- experience in laboratory science, transfusion service or health care field preferred
- 1-3 years supervisory experience preferred
- Understanding of blood products and histocompatibility as it pertains to matching of HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) patients and products preferred

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Current Wisconsin driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively with donors, volunteers and employees of organization utilizing instructive or persuasive skills.
