Job Description

This position will be housed in the Dickenson Extension Office and will also work across Buchannan, Lee, Russell, Scott, Tazewell, and Wise coounties . The Extension Agent - FCS, SNAP-Education position is a Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Family Nutrition Program (FNP) position on restricted funds from SNAP-Ed. Although the position is on restricted funds, the SNAP-Ed grant has been renewed annually since 1996. The Extension Agent will provide overall coordination in planning, developing, and implementing the SNAP-Ed volunteer training program and the policy, systems, environmental (PSE) change work as part of a community-based program within the assigned area. The agent will also be responsible for development and implementation of programs that will further VCE initiatives; and for building community capacity and forging partnerships in opportunistic areas of improvement for SNAP-eligible individuals and families. Family and Consumer Science (FCS) agent positions require a service mentality as well as process and subject matter expertise. This position will report directly to the District Director with training, coaching, and input from the FNP Program Manager, SNAP-Ed Agent Initiative and the FNP PSE Program Coordinator.

Required Qualifications

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a nutrition/public health-related field from an accredited university or college with the ability to attain a master’s degree. Experience recruiting and managing volunteers and implementing effective volunteer education methodologies. Experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders, community organizations, and/or Extension Agents and staff to reach limited-income populations. Experience planning and implementing programs.

Extension agents demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, and a team-oriented mindset; yet are able to work independently and have a strong desire to help clients succeed. Extension agents recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion in the development and delivery of Extension programs, actively work to diversify program participation and are responsible for VCE's civil rights policies and compliance with affirmative action.

Individuals will be hired at the Associate Extension Agent level. A master’s degree and promotion to Extension Agent are required no later than the sixth year of employment. The person in this position is expected to travel to provide in-person leadership and to build community partnerships with few exceptions for telework.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in leading programs that effectively involve people from different cultural and/or racial, ethnic, socioeconomic backgrounds. Demonstrated experience with large project management. A master’s degree is preferred.
