Job Description
Reporting to the Instrumentation/Electrical Supervisor, the Instrumentation/Electronic Technician performs specialized duties in Power Plant involving maintenance and installation of electrical and instrumentation equipment. Installs conduit, wiring, and makes electrical connections up to 480 volts in accordance with National Electrical Code. Calibrates and maintains distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers, and continuous emission monitoring systems. Diagnoses problems with configuration and calibrations of instrument systems. Performs maintenance and preventative maintenance for electrical and instrumentation equipment on all boilers, turbine generator, pumps, ash removal, pollution control equipment, and all other auxiliary equipment. Troubleshoots complex instrumentation, control and electrical circuits as required. Identifies and implements opportunities to improve Power Plant control systems. Ensures performance of duties in a timely manner and in compliance with federal and state law, university policies and procedures, and any associated regulations and guidelines. Overtime may be necessary due to emergencies and breakdowns.
Required Qualifications
- Journeyman level mechanic experience with electrical systems up to 480 volts.
- Verifiable training and experience in the maintenance and installation of industrial controls and instrumentation including the ability to troubleshoot all types of control systems and electrical interlocking systems.
- Ability to use relevant hand tools, power tools, and electronic diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to interpret instructions and complete assignments independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to read and understand electrical blueprints and drawings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Power Plant experience.
- Strong computer skills.
- DCS and PLC configuration and troubleshooting experience.
- ASOPE Power Plant First Class License or higher.
- VA DOPOR licensure as a journeyman electrician.

Additional Information
- Though work is performed primarily indoors, must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Ability to safely, frequently and independently move and handle (including pushing/pulling) items weighing up to 50 pounds; climb steps and ladders up to four stories; work in confined spaces, in extreme heat and dusty environments.
- Work may require bending, crouching and/or kneeling, standing, sitting and walking for up to one-hour duration at a time.
- Must have a criminal background check.
- Must have health and safety medical check.
- Must be able to use respirator.
- Emergency Personnel.
- Must have valid driver's license.
- Alternate work schedule: The plant is operated 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Work hours are normally Monday thru Friday 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
- During periods of inclement weather, emergency situations or for special projects, may work a modified schedule and additional hours to meet the needs of the department.
- This position is also designated as Emergency Personnel and must be available as situations warrants for response to after-hours calls.
- Must have annual health and safety medical check as part of health assurance program.
- Occasional use/wearing of a respirator may be required.
- Must wear employer provided uniforms as instructed by supervisor or lead.
- As situation dictates, must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- This position may be issued a mobile communication device (such as radio, cellphone, iPad, iPod, pager, etc.). Devices issued are the responsibility of the employee and are to be returned in satisfactory condition upon separation of employment. Devices are to be used according to supervisor instruction and according to relevant policies.
