What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Laboratory Assistant Part Time position at VOCA?
Job Summary: Please note this position will be primarily for COVID Testing. The position is outdoors under a drive thru tent. Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors.
Under the General Supervision of the Manager and Supervisor, processes incoming specimens, handling reference lab specimens, including data entry and transport as ordered by the respective physicians.
Job Responsibilities:
1. 1. Process all Routine specimens delivered to Central Laboratory Services.
- Reviews specimen requirements and processing procedures for every section within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
- Follows appropriate processing, storage and delivery procedures for each department section. This includes the use of the pneumatic tube system.
- Reviews that all specimens are properly labeled and that all orders are current. Making inquiries as needed to ensure that all testing is completed in a timely manner.
- Must verify that the correct sample is send for the testing that is requested. Following up with the appropriate clinician when needed. Will also include making inquiries to the other laboratory sections.
- Enters information into the LIS following established procedures.
- Knows how to register specimens in the LIS that arrive from outside clients.
- Delivers specimens to the specific benches where testing is performed.
2. 2. Process all STAT requests received in Central Laboratory Services.
- Following established protocol must receive and process all STAT requests in a timely fashion to ensure that the department meets its turn around time goal 100% of the time.
- Reviews that all specimens are properly labeled and that all orders are current. Making inquiries as needed to ensure that all testing is completed in a timely manner.
- Delivers specimens to the specific benches where testing is performed.
3. 3. Process all specimens delivered to Central Laboratory Services that must then be sent to an outside reference laboratory.
- Must be familiar with the different processing requirements for all of the 120 reference labs. This includes obtaining all billing information, determining the correct reference laboratory to direct the testing and being familiar with send out testing that is interfaced.
- Verifies that all tests are accurately and completely ordered using established procedures. Using lab specific manual forms when necessary.
- Must attend the Proper Transport of Infectious Substances and Diagnostic Specimen class bi-annually to maintain certification.
- Is expected to be competent in the use of the ARUP 2000 computer system.
- Makes inquiries as needed.
- Must serve as a reference source for questions pertaining to “hard to find” testing.
- Works with a Courier service to schedule and ship specimens and/or paperwork to various locations.
4. 4. Grants and Studies
- Is responsible for registering research patients in the LIS.
- Must be familiar or able to locate the protocols for over 150 grant and studies that the department participates in. This includes pouring off split samples, slide preparation, storage and shipping requirements.
- Knows when it is appropriate to order collection and processing fees following established procedures.
- Is familiar with the different supplies used for the various protocols, including cryovials, monovettes and other such unique devices

- Requires good customer service skills, which include courtesy and tact in dealing with patients, parents, house staff and fellow employees.
- Ability to quickly understand technical and clerical details of assigned work.
- Must be methodical and able to establish priorities.
- Must be able to recognize confidential issues and maintain this confidentiality, complying with all Federal and State Regulations.
- Must be able to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Must have knowledge of computers.
- Ability to handle high volumes of work without error.
PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES
Working conditions resulting from this environment include:
- High exposure to blood, therefore may have a higher than usual risk of contracting blood borne infections such as Hepatitis B, etc.
- High exposure to needles, lancets and other sharp objects. Must use extra care in handling these objects to avoid needle sticks.
- Work involves frequent walking or standing and sitting for a brief period of time.
- Large amounts of walking and standing as some lifting (20-30 lbs.) and carrying.
- May be exposed to odorous specimens and materials, chemicals and analytical equipment
- High stress levels in dealing with parents, physicians, nurses, etc.
- Repetitive Motions
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Exposed to odorous specimens and materials.
- High exposure to blood and body fluids, biological and infectious agents.
- Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
- Exposure to chemicals and analytical equipment, including Dry Ice and various Acids.
Education:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High school graduate. Experience, training, and/or course study in Clinical Laboratory Science preferred.
