Fleet mechanics are responsible for performing vehicle and/or equipment repair and maintenance as assigned and in accordance with company standards and any dealer or factory standards.
What You'll Do:
- Picks up work orders to determine the load, time of delivery, and destination
- Inspects truck for safety, including raising and checking under a 60-lb hood
- Performs work as outlined on repair orders with efficiency and accuracy
- Diagnose the cause of any malfunction and perform the repair
- Fabricate special tools and/or parts and welding as required
- Read and work from parts books and/or manuals
- Sets repair priorities in conjunction with or in the absence of a department supervisor
- Actively participates in the analysis of labor needs, length of time to complete projects, and repair items needed
- Takes responsibility to follow up on parts orders. Make sure parts arrive prior to scheduling needed equipment repairs
- Document work performed on any and all equipment/company vehicles
- Inspect equipment in the assigned areas to ensure safety standards have been met
- Repair all safety problems in a timely manner in accordance with company policies
- Road-test vehicles to ensure the quality of repair
- Keep shop area organized and clean
- Assist in other areas of the shop as need
- Other tasks or projects as assigned
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years of mechanic experience required
- Must have own tools
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively - both written and verbal
- Adequate vision and hand-eye coordination to make precise adjustments and repairs to equipment
- Must be physically capable of lifting and placing large truck parts including clutches, brakes, mounted tires, engine and accessory components
- Must be able to climb onto and off large vehicles and construction-type equipment on a recurring basis. Requires the removal and replacement of heavy items in hard to reach places
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record
Physical Demands:
- Standing varies depending on schedule demand and necessary workload. Standing stationary would be on concrete or on uneven surfaces.
- Walking occurs occasionally throughout the day at job sites. This could be on concrete or uneven ground at construction sites. In general, walking is for short distances of 30 to 50 feet. It varies depending on schedule demand and necessary workload.
- Sitting occurs occasionally when road-testing vehicles or testing equipment. There is a good deal of bouncing despite the air seat.
- Climbing occurs occasionally throughout the workday. The mechanic climbs into the cab of the truck which requires a first step of 21 inches, the second step of 16 inches, and the third step of 12 inches. When exiting, he/she again must descend those steps. There is a rail to hang on to when exiting. The mechanic also climbs up and down a ladder at the rear and left side of the truck. The mechanic could perform this multiple times daily.

Working Conditions:
- The mechanics generally work inside of a shop anywhere from 70% to 90% of the day. The remainder is generally outdoors and includes various site locations.
- The mechanic is occasionally required to work near moving mechanical parts and in outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
