Legal Assistant / Paralegal Position
Summary:
The Warren County State’s Attorney’s office, among other things, prosecutes all of Warren County’s felony, misdemeanor, and forfeiture cases. This work constitutes the majority, but not all, of the work assigned to the Warren County State’s Attorney’s Office felony desk legal assistant. The felony desk assistant is assigned various work by the State’s Attorney and Assistant State’s Attorney.
Hours:
The office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed for lunch from Noon-1:00 p.m. As this is a courthouse position, employees are off on government holidays, all of which are paid.
Basic Duties:
This position is demanding and requires the widest range of specialized skills of any other non-attorney position in the office. Basic duties include shared office administrative responsibilities such as keeping a calendar, typing letters, answering phones, filing, mailing, procuring information, etc.
Advanced Duties:
The felony desk legal assistant must possess, or develop, specialized paraprofessional skills. Specialized duties include typing court filings, e-filing court documents, notifying witnesses, coordinating case progression, scheduling hearings, and more. The felony legal assistant must understand numerous legal terms and concepts and possess or develop skills specific to the nature of the position. This spot on the team requires a professional that can take initiative, learn quickly, work without supervision, and begin projects independently. Other necessary skills can be developed by a person possessing these abilities.
Confidentiality:
Because the office is a law enforcement agency, personnel are exposed to sensitive, private, and confidential information. Employees are expected to keep information learned within the office, within the confines of the office. Applicants must understand the importance of and maintain the integrity of confidential matters.
Skills:
At a minimum, any applicant should have some basic competency in the following areas:
- Communications
- Taking messages
- Typing
- Proficiency with Windows based PCs
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Familiarity with Google Mail, Calendar, and Drive
Professional Development:
It is anticipated that the selected candidate will learn and/or develop most of the advanced skills necessary while on the job.
