Watson Children’s Shelter is seeking applicants for a full-time Family Support Specialist position for Healthy Foundations. The Program, developed using the Healthy Families America national evidenced-based model, is designed to help parents of newborns get their children off to a healthy start and to help families overcome challenges. This model is a “primary prevention” model, aimed at reducing the risk of child maltreatment. The Family Support Specialist is responsible for initiating and maintaining regular and long-term home visiting support with families. Duties include regular and consistent home visits; establishing a trusting relationship with families; assisting in strengthening the parent-child relationship; assisting parents in improving their skills to strengthen the home environment; improving the family’s support system; and increasing the family’s ability to problem solve and assume the role of advocate for themselves and their children. Other duties include identifying and referring families to community resources at other supportive agencies, including health care services. The Family Support Specialist will also be responsible for assisting the family in establishing goals and creating a plan to meet those goals, as well as the assessment of, and education on the normal growth and development of the identified child.
Candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree in a human services field (e.g., social work, psychology) are preferred. Candidates must be able to establish and maintain personal and programmatic boundaries while providing supportive services to families. Strong candidates will have experience in family systems work; demonstrate maturity and experience in working with children (0-5 years of age) and their families; have knowledge of normal child growth and development and parent-child relationships; and have the ability to relate to families from a family-centered and strength-based approach to services. Other helpful skills include having a knowledge of maternal and infant health/mental healthy; understanding of prenatal bonding and development; ACE’s training; ability to be non-judgmental; motivational interviewing skills; creative and knowledgeable about community resources; enjoy and function well with long-term, ongoing goals; and understand other concepts related to child abuse and neglect. Previous home visiting experience is preferred. Position is full-time and eligible for full benefits.
