Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • As Magnetic Recording Engineer, R&D Engineering, you will utilize results of computational simulations and knowledge of HAMR magnetic recording physics to guide future designs and to interact with component teams (head and media) and testing organizations.


Qualifications

REQUIRED
  • Ph.D. in Applied Science, preferably with a focus in computational Magnetism
  • Advanced understanding of magnetic recording physics for heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR)
  • Familiarity with common performance metrics in the magnetic recording industry

PREFERRED
  • Ability to independently code and utilize micromagnetic models employing LLG, LLB, and modifications to these schemes
  • Familiarity with unix scripting and managing large numbers of jobs on a computing cluster
  • Programming languages (Fortran, Python, C/C , Cuda, Matlab)
  • Familiarity with HAMR publications in the literature
  • Statistical analysis of data (JMP, etc.)
  • Experience with experimental design
  • Publications and patents demonstrating the preceding requirements are highly desirable
  • Prior experience with AWS computing
  • Understanding of how recording metrics (SNR, equalized-SNR, resolution and distortion) impact recording channel performance

SKILLS
  • Experience in magnetic recording industry or similar technology performing numerical simulations of experimental components.
  • Identify and pursue critical technology issues without guidance.
  • Failure analysis using data-model comparisons
  • Technology evaluation, including employing extrapolation
  • Communicate complicated technical information in simplified concise terms on a frequent basis (oral presentations and written reports).
  • Defend technical views boldly and debate scientific topics professionally.
  • Mentor less-experienced colleagues, interns, etc.

Compensation & Benefits Details
  • An employee's pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Colorado or remote jobs that can be performed in Colorado. This range may be modified in the future.
  • You will also be eligible to participate in Western Digital's Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan and to receive equity awards under our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs), pursuant to the terms of these programs. RSU awards are also available to eligible new hires, subject to Western Digital's Standard Terms and Conditions for Restricted Stock Unit Awards.
