I.POSITION SUMMARY:
The Equipment Technician will be responsible for performing routine technical support services for equipment and vehicle readiness to support environmental field work and emergency hazmat responses. Perform subsurface exploration duties using a Geoprobe direct push drill rig. Work also includes installation of piezometers, and monitoring wells. Work as part of a multiple person team on projects. Field locate required exploration points and determine elevations of points. Develop site reconnaissance information. Load soil samples, exploration tools, and instrumentation/well installation tools and supplies onto trucks or drill rigs. Prepares United States (US) Department of Transportation (DOT) paperwork, as required. Provide input as to how to best perform exploration tasks. Report required maintenance to supervisor and perform maintenance tasks as required. In addition, you should be a self-starter, energetic, and able to safely participate in an exploration team.
Overnight travel will be required depending on the project locations.
II.POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND DUTIES:
Responsibilities will include the following:
Geoprobe Operator:
- Estimated 6 – 8 weeks of site work per year.
- Operate Geoprobe – Model 6600 rig and capable of direct push drilling methods.
- Responsible for drilling to depths of 5 to 100 feet.
- Follow safety rules, guidelines, and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
- Understand utility locate requirements.
- Responsible for the safety of the exploration crew and for ensuring that the assigned safety gear is being utilized during the execution of the project
- Drive vehicles to site and for routine maintenance.
Equipment Technician
- Ability to learn and perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Perform in-house calibrations, functional tests, diagnostic tests, and minor maintenance/repair of scientific/response instrumentation on a regular basis.
- Calibrations include performing specific calibration and performance assessments of sensor-type components in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
- Functional testing includes turning equipment on/off, verifying the item is charged/charging, and/or within expected bump response. Diagnostic tests include assessment of interaction between sensor/detection components and mechanical components such as pumps, lamps, motors, filters, supply cylinders, detectors, igniters, heaters, transmitters/receivers, etc.
- Minor maintenance/repair includes assessing the general condition, replacing minor components such as O-rings, tightening loose connections, etc., lubricating, installing software updates, confirming presence and condition of accessories, and confirming presence of expendable pieces.
- Record and maintain documentation of calibrations in logbooks and electronic data collection systems
- Identify and report issues to project managers, other contractors and the client
- Participate in equipment inventories or audits
- Shipment of equipment and DOT/IATA Dangerous Goods
- Research and evaluation of instrumentation, equipment, and/or technology

III.LEVEL OF AUTONOMY:
Works independently performing routine and non-routine tasks related to equipment and vehicle calibration and maintenance within EPA facilities. Works with professional field staff (i.e. Engineers, Scientists, etc.). Track and report on asset management to include producing reports for EPA owned equipment, vehicles, and supplies at each of the logistics centers. Provide general technical contract support and assist with maintaining emergency response readiness and field deployments.
IV.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Minimum Years' Experience: 4 years
Education Level: High school diploma or equivalent; Associates degree a plus
Prior Training/Skills Recommended:
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
- Driller/well installation licensure
- Equipment/mechanical/scientific background desired
- CPR/First Aid Trained helpful, but not required
- Current OSHA 40-HR HAZWOPER certification helpful, but not required,
- Department of Transportation (DOT) / International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Shipping Certification helpful, but not required,
- Scott Certified Air Supplied Technician Certification helpful, but not required,
- Strong skills with field monitoring instrumentation,
- Strong electrical and mechanical skills,
- Strong communication skills,
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, repair scientific instrumentation and equipment,
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to drive large response trucks and trailers.
