Position : Campus Spirit Coordinator (Dance / Cheer) Location : Liberty, MO
Job Id : 406 # of Openings : 1 General Function Reporting to the Vice President, the Spirit Team Coach is responsible for the management and administration of all activities related to Cheer, Dance, and the College Mascot and exercises direct supervision of recruiting, training, and coaching student-athletes participating in these activities.
The Spirit Team Coach also serves as the chief spirit officer for the College designing and implementing programs that incorporate school spirit activation in new or long-standing College events and activities.

As a member of the Jewell Community, the Spirit Team Coach is fully responsible for compliance with policies and procedures as well as all applicable bylaws of the governing body of the sport, compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations, as well as Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) rules and all College policies and procedures serving as the model for appropriate conduct towards officials, spectators, and athletes while being committed to equity and inclusion in all activities. Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategy while managing a spirit team scholarship budget in a coordinated effort with the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Admission to evaluate talent, recruit and retain spirit team members.
- Develop and manage team operations and budget including coaching / choreography, equipment, travel, meals, uniforms, supplies, and various other training and performance logistics to ensure a consistent, high quality professional spirit team member experience and presence at campus events.
Operational duties include but are not limited to : Developing a regular practice / rehearsal schedule to provide both individual and team development for cheer and dance.
Evaluating students’ skills and reviewing performance at practice or events to determine the needs for individual or team improvement and adjusting coaching techniques as necessary based on the strengths and weaknesses of team.
Monitoring the use of equipment to ensure safe and proper use and following established procedures in the event of injury.
Driving vans to transport team when appropriate.
- Plan, promote and conduct camps, clinics, and / or lessons to generate awareness of William Jewell College and the spirit team program while generating revenue to assist in underwriting spirit team activities.
- Organize and conduct spirit activation in collaboration with the Department of Athletics, Department of Performing Arts, Student Life, Office of Marketing, and the Office of Advancement to ensure students and attendees are engaged and entertained at community, campus, and athletic events.
Spirit activation includes but is not limited to designing and implementing fan experiences at athletic contests and campus events, ensuring the College has presence in the community through Spirit Team engagements, and assisting other units with planning to incorporate brand affinity building into events.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience as a coach or athlete in a collegiate level Cheer / Dance / Spirit program. Preference given to candidates with head coach experience.
- Bachelor’s degree. Preference given to candidates with degrees or experience in marketing, project management, event planning or physical education.
- Ability to work effectively to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, alumni and College staff.
- Organization skills and ability to clearly explain cheer and dance skills to students.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Have, or be willing to obtain, a Missouri Class E Driver’s License.
Working Conditions Normal office environment as well as indoor and outdoor athletics facilities. Some travel required. Evening and weekend work required.
