As an Excavator Operator, you will play a crucial role in assisting with grading operations by operating the machine efficiently and following instructions and specifications provided by the supervisor. Your primary responsibilities will include working with ground personnel, excavating trenches to the proper depth/grade, observing signals and markings, and maintaining a safe working environment.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with ground crew: Work closely with ground personnel to coordinate excavation activities, follow their directions regarding craning, gravel placement, and grading.
- Operate equipment to specifications: Follow hand signals, grade stakes, or other markings to ensure the work is performed according to specifications and meet quality standards.
- Excavate trenches to proper depth/grade: Utilize your skills to excavate trenches accurately, ensuring they meet the required depth and grade specifications.
- Maintain production schedule: Ability to cut grade efficiently, minimizing time spent on excavating while ensuring production stays on schedule.
- Monitor soil conditions: Stay alert and be aware of changes in soil conditions and materials that may impact operations and make necessary adjustments accordingly.
- Comply with safety regulations: Conduct trench work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others.
- Traffic control: Effectively flag traffic to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment on the job site.
- Stake maintenance: Check and maintain grade stakes accurately to ensure precise measurements and grading.
- Equipment setup and maintenance: Set up and maintain traffic control aids, erosion control measures, and ensure proper functioning of equipment throughout the shift.
- Material handling: Safely load and unload materials using the excavator as required.
- Site cleanup: Contribute to the general cleanup of the job site, ensuring a clean and organized work environment.
- Equipment monitoring and maintenance: Regularly monitor gauges, dials, and indicators to ensure the excavator is working properly. Perform daily maintenance checks and report any potential safety or equipment issues to the supervisor immediately.
- Process adherence: Follow all processes and procedures correctly, maintaining compliance with company standards.
- Safety gear and attire: Wear appropriate clothing, shoes, and personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for the job.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Minimum six months to one year of experience operating an excavator.
- Ability to acquire understanding and absorb new information quickly.
- Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Problem-solving skills to detect and address issues, errors, and non-compliance.
- Excellent planning, organizing, and time management abilities.

Physical Demands:
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 50 lbs approximately 50% of the time.
- Standing, walking, and climbing approximately 50% of the time.
- Occasional sitting in a normal position for an extended time approximately 50% of the time.
- Frequent reaching, handling, and feeling approximately 70% of the time.
- Frequent use of finger dexterity approximately 70% of the time.
Working Conditions:
- Moderate to high noise level.
- Non-environmentally controlled work environment, exposed to extreme heat and cold.

- Depth perception: The ability to judge the relative distances between objects accurately.

The posted salary or pay compensation ranges are approximate and dependent on applicable experience and qualifications. Upper ranges are flexible.
