Job SummaryThe HIM Director is accountable for the administrative management and application of the science of informatics to the collection, storage, use, and transmission of information to meet the legal, professional, ethical and administrative records-keeping requirements of health care delivery. The Director is viewed as the expert authority on Health Information Management as it relates to the patient record and partners with both clinical and financial operations to plan information systems, develop policy and identify current and future information needs for the Health System, including University Hospitals, Hospital-based Clinics, and the Faculty Practice.

Job Duties
- Develop, implement, and monitor policies and procedures regarding patient records to ensure compliance with all regulating and accrediting agencies.
- Assists with compliance of regulatory standards to include The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, State standards, and Medicare Conditions of Participation. Provide assistance to assure management of various resources to maintain maximum efficiency and meet performance objectives.
- Develops, implement, and assess long-range and short-term goals; direct the translation of strategic priorities into daily operations in keeping with health information management goals and objectives.
- Partners with the Health System EMR team and related leadership to provide oversight of the analysis and management of the content of the medical record to ensure appropriate documentation.
- Ensure effective service is provided to patients, clinicians, and user departments. Oversee, through the management of operational leaders, the ongoing day-to-day departmental activities to ensure accurate comprehensive records of patient care and follow-up that includes: a) Management of the master patient index; b) Management of inpatient and outpatient transcription; c) Management of Release of Information; d) Management of referring provider and patient communications; e) Management of the birth registry; f) Co-Coordination of the Health Information Management Committee, including the completion of documentation and medical staff reports, serves on committees as representative of assigned program as appropriate. g) Presents formally to various senior level audiences
- Develops employee engagement strategies to promote employee satisfaction, retention, and talent acquisition. Promotes a culture of customer service aimed at creating an optimal patient experience and a collaborative work environment. Develops reward and recognition tools to promote exemplary performance in keeping with institutional core values. Designs professional development models for staff to provide opportunities for growth and advancement.
- Active participation in the Hospitals' Revenue Cycle operations.
- Develop and allocate funds of annual departmental budgets to monitor cost effectiveness of department performance, employee will be held accountable for performing job in cost-effective manner.
- Oversight of the establishment and maintenance of continual productivity standards and outcome measures to successfully achieve annual departmental and institutional objectives.
- Develop and revise job procedures and descriptions as needed.
- Ensure that managers conduct probationary reviews and an annual evaluation for each staff member under direct supervision and review all other staff members' evaluations and distribute to staff members prior to the due date.
- Responsible for coordinating RAC and MIC/MAC policies and procedures in conjunction with the Directors of Revenue Cycle, Revenue Integrity and Compliance.
- Demonstrate compliance to the Health Systems' cultural behaviors, mission/vision, values, and commitments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
