POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Engineering Manager - System Integration
Reports To: VP of Mechanical Engineering and System Integration
Classification: Exempt
Status: Regular, Full-time
Location: Auburn Hills, MI, or Midland, MI
Job Summary:
The System Integration Engineering Manager is an important team leader with departmental responsibilities for cross functional system integration and engineering activities. This lead position serves a managing coach for direct reports in the areas of system integration, requirements engineering, and technical publications, while also supporting functional safety and compliance. The members of this team provide collaborative links within multiple cross-functional product development teams including Application, Mechanical, Software, Simulation, Electronics, Functional Safety, Quality, and other product development disciplines relating to complex lithium ion battery systems.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide guidance and leadership of the System Integration team.
- Develop and maintain internal system and subsystem requirements, including battery system architecture definition, critical design guidelines, and design standards.
- Coordinate and conduct analyses to optimize system requirements based upon performance, safety, affordability, robustness, regulatory, and industry standards.
- Lead cross-functional teams in the definition and development of functional safety deliverables.
- Develop and maintain interface management documentation such as interface controls documents and requirement compliance matrixes.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with requirements through active participation in team meetings, design reviews, and workshops.
- Perform detailed assessments as required to provide input to critical design decisions, product optimization, and potential tailoring of requirements.
- Oversee the integration and the commissioning of XALT/FBPS systems during product development and aftersales operations.
- Oversee technical publications team operations.
- Provide technical expertise and advanced product diagnostics support to the XALT/FBPS service team for customers with the intentions of maximizing product uptime.
- Establish and maintain all aspects of customer-focused product integration documentation.
Additional Support Responsibilities:
- Drive robust engineering process & discipline including Boundary Diagrams, Item Definition, Interface Matrices, HARA, FMEA, FMEDA, Robustness Checklists, DFM, DFA, DVP&R, and Special Characteristics.
- Pro-actively support design validation teams in test plan reviews to ensure testing strategies and methods truly stress and verify design compliance and safety.
- Work closely with marketing functions and applications engineers to understand customer technical requirements and build multi-generation technical plans for different applications.
- Keep abreast of developments within the industry related to the state of the art of Li-Ion battery pack systems and key components; assess competitive technologies for system level innovation, cost, performance, and functional advantages.
- Support timely resolution of system-level customer issues, including mechanical, electrical, and system behavior.
- Prepare & present technical papers externally, and properly document all technical learning internally.
- Develop and maintain resource plan inclusive of direct reports as well as hired engineering services.
Position Qualifications:
- M.S. in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (B.S. acceptable with sufficient experience).
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the development, design and release of electrical and mechanical components or systems.
- Minimum five years of experience in electric vehicle programs and battery design and/or integration.
- Working knowledge of ISO, SAE, USABC and design & testing procedures for batteries.
- Knowledge of lithium-ion battery chemistries.
- Understanding of Battery Management Systems and relationships between controllable attributes, and battery life and performance. Must be well versed on all potential battery system interfaces.
- Experience with Requirements Management tools such as IBM DOORS or Polarion.
- Experience leading projects through the complete product development cycle.
- Understanding of functional safety tools and methods pursuant to ISO 26262.
- Working knowledge / practical experience using scrum or agile techniques.
