Position Focus:
The Mobile Health Assistant (MHA) will provide health engagement and linkage to services to support an NIH grant-funded project related to infectious disease, primarily HIV infection treatment and prevention, and substance use disorders. They will be responsible for assisting clinical staff and patients during medical visits and providing linkage to economic and other social services. The MHA will perform the majority of their responsibilities on a Mobile Pharmacy and Clinic (MPC) in their designated communities.
Maintains comfortable, orderly, safe, and clean environment. Prepares patients for examinations. Provides routine information related to medical treatments and procedures. Measures and records vital signs. Collects specimens. Conduct rapid HIV and Hepatitis C testing, diagnostic testing for opioid use disorder (OUD), other health screening, and assess for other healthcare, social and economic needs. If clinician unavailable, provide access to a computer tablet that will connect the person with a telehealth provider who can assess and prescribe medications for HIV and HCV treatment, HIV prevention (PrEP), and OUD and overdose prevention along with other relevant health conditions. Function as a member of a rapid response team, as needed, that will bring services and prescribed medications. Will include a driver, Community Health Outreach Coordinator, pharmacist, and a clinician if needed, and will bring the medication(s) to the patient. Identify needs (e.g., other healthcare, mental health, social, and economic needs) that impact quality of life and make active referrals and provides advocacy in obtaining services. Helps complete applications for services and benefits to obtain additional assistance. Enters data related to patient encounters into a database. Assists patients with making follow-up appointments, filling prescriptions, and meeting other healthcare needs. Records and reports patient information. Retrieves laboratory test results and patient files. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. Maintains medical equipment. Performs clerical functions related to medical activities. Performs other duties as assigned within their scope of practice. Must be willing to travel.
Essential Duties
1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. 3. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. 4. Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and follow-up are completed per protocol procedures. 5. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May assist research and support staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.
Required Education and Experience
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Knowledge of basic medical terminology and ability to perform basic medical procedures (e.g., phlebotomy, collect lab specimens, take vital signs).
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Knowledge of designated community including social networks, healthcare organizations, and other social and support services.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Ability to work effectively in diverse environments. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to be non-judgmental and empathic. Mature, reliable, and able to work independently, effectively, and efficiently under pressure, and to multi-task, juggling competing demands with limited supervision.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Highly organized, detail-oriented with the ability to function under deadline pressure. Ability to maintain integrity in working with confidential information.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to communicate effectively with clinical staff, pharmacist, patients, and other health organizations. High computer proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Electronic Medical Record systems and willing and able to learn new computer programs.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bilingual in Spanish and English. Experience working in the designated community related to social services and/or health engagement.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
Phlebotomy (or ability to get certification within 60 days of employment). Valid Driver's License. Certification by the A.A.M.A., A.R.M.A., or C.N.A.R. (or ability to get certification/registration within 90 days of employment).
