What are the responsibilities and job description for the Education and Career Advisor - International Learning Center position at YMCA of Greater Boston?
The Education and Career Advisor is passionate about our mission to support adult English language learners moving into thriving self-sufficiency in the U.S. workforce and culture. The position coordinates with administrative and teaching staff to administer quality programming that supports students’ progress toward their academic and professional goals.
Advising Responsibilities Include:
- Advise Career Advancement and English for Immigrant Entrepreneur classes funded by English for New Bostonians (ENB).
- Assist students in identifying their educational and career goals and help determine measurable steps to be taken toward their goals.
- Lead classroom activities to support goal setting and develop a program event calendar.
- Gather and share information about steps needed for career paths that interest the students.
- Ensure students meet program attendance requirements and troubleshoot when necessary.
- Provide individual advising sessions with students, document goals and progress to share with classroom teachers.
- Assist students with job searching, academic pursuit, and career advancement.
- Help students navigate available resources and social service agencies.
- Assist with intake, placement, and orientation.
- Collaborate with program coordinator in bi-weekly advising meetings to address student concerns and share insights and resources.
- Provide quarterly follow-up of students after leaving program.
Documentation Responsibilities Include:
- Create and update monthly attendance sheets for Career Advancement and English for Immigrant Entrepreneur classes.
- Ensure advising appointments are scheduled.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of student advising data into ILC and funder databases, monitor ILC performance according to funder standards.
Administrative Responsibilities Include:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of funder policies and requirements.
- Participate actively in meetings and contribute to continuous improvement of program.
- Assist with assessments and other ILC tests as needed.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, or related field, preferred.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Advanced digital literacy skills, proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
