POSITION SUMMARY
The Water Fitness Instructor is responsible for providing direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in water fitness classes and for maintaining all rosters and schedules for those classes. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Leads water fitness classes in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared routines in advance to incorporate a variety of water fitness movements and techniques to keep the participants interested and motivated.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with all individuals associated with the water fitness programs, helping them connect with each other and the YMCA. Identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatic programs and schedules and as appropriate refers individuals to other programs.
- Ensures all participants are registered per Activenet rosters.
- Attends all Aquatics staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Assists lifeguards as needed in emergency situations. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment and reports damaged equipment to supervisor.

- Requires one to three months related experience and/or training, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before participants. Ability to provide detailed instructions regarding movements and routines.
- Position requires a welcoming atmosphere and an instructor who can build strong relationships with all participants and can demonstrate tact and positive support of the YMCA at all times to all participants. Must be flexible to changes in allotted space and time, must be prompt and prepared for class on time, and must be able to adhere to all Y policies and procedures while reflecting a positive attitude to the participants.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; swim and tread water and talk or hear. Must be able to instruct and observe participants in techniques. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move equipment up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and ability see while in or out of the water.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals (chlorine), extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
- Instructors can be hired with a minimum of 3 years demonstrated water fitness participation and/or instruction at a reduced rate of pay. Candidates or employees who have or achieve and maintain a nationally accredited water exercise certification through water art, Aquatic Exercise Association, or specialty certification in a class such as aquatic Zumba, Silver Sneakers Splash will be eligible for a higher rate of pay. CPR for the professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen Administration and Blood Borne Pathogen certification required of everyone upon hire and must be current at all times.
