What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Organizer position at You Can Vote?
You Can Vote (YCV) is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that educates, registers, and empowers voters across the state of NC. We operate state-wide and are headquartered in Durham.
Contract Scope
- Work with leaders to plan events such as volunteer recruitment, training, and voter education events
- Plan for and lead voter registration drives. While leading and managing events, the deputy organizer must
- Follow all election laws and YCV policies
- Accurately help voters complete voter registration applications
- Accurately communicate election law rules and photo ID requirements
- Ensure rigorous quality control measures for all voter registration applications and communication with voters
- Collect and turn in all completed applications with appropriate documentation to HQ in compliance with YCV policies for timeliness and quality control
- If supervising volunteers, ensure volunteers comply with YCV policies and federal election laws
- Ensure volunteers are non-partisan and accept any voter’s registration application
- Remove and report any volunteers who do not comply with YCV policies and election laws
- Debrief volunteers after the shift to answer any questions, share stories, thank them and reschedule for the next volunteer shift.
- Collect all completed forms and materials from volunteers
- Mentor new captains and volunteers to develop their skills
- Identify potential new captains for additional training
- Identify and recruit volunteers who will help educate and turn out voters
- Work with supervisor to identify community events and potential partner organizations for volunteer recruitment
- Provide information about YCV, volunteer, and training options to community members at recruitment and tabling events
- Direct potential volunteers and supportive community members to sign up at youcanvote.org/volunteer or on our sign-up sheet at event
- Regularly communicate with the supervisor to discuss priority locations, volunteer needs, volunteers who need to be trained as captains, and suggestions for reaching additional voters
Skills & Experience
YCV is looking for self-starters with demonstrated interest and experience working with individuals in the community and an ability to talk to anyone. All Deputies must be willing to learn and comply with all non-partisan voter registration laws.
We are especially interested in applicants whose qualities include:
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Past experience working with the public at community events.
- Familiarity with the region and community
- Ability to adapt quickly, take constructive criticism, follow YCV’s guidelines, pay attention to detail, and maintain nonpartisanship.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and exercise good judgment
- Dual language skills a plus, especially Spanish
