What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community School Director position at Young Audiences New York?
Position Summary:
The Community School Director is YANY’s lead staff for PS 165M, a community school in Manhattan where YANY is designated the lead community-based organization (CBO). The Community School Director (CSD) will lead the integration and implementation of expanded learning and enrichment activities at this school. The CSD is a member of the School Leadership Team (SLT), serving as an advisor to the principal, leading the coordination of several partners, and tracking progress and results.
The CSD will report directly to YANY’s Director of Programs and will manage a staff team as needed. The CSD will cultivate professional relationships with school staff, school leadership, and YANY funding partners at the DOE’s Office of Community Schools. The position will be working at the school site during the school year and in YANY’s office when the school is not in session (exclusive of holidays).
Responsibilities:
Serve as YANY representative in the school community and the community-at-large;
*Coordinate and integrate YANY arts residencies and other enrichment activities for students and families, including, but not limited to, community events such as health screening and other partner programs as identified by the community served;
*Partner with the principal, Student Leadership Team (SLT), Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and parent coordinator to implement a transformative model of family engagement that creates strong school-to-home partnerships for learning;
*Practice collaborative leadership by supporting the school administration with Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) goals, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) objectives, and school curriculum;
*Lead Attendance Team meetings, actively participate in SLT meetings, and work with school leadership to assess the school specific needs;
*Develop positive working relationships with parents, students, teachers, and funders;
*Develop and manage annual program budget;
*Supervise quantitative and qualitative data collection and research and prepare relevant data to share at stakeholder meetings and for reporting (on student attendance, social-emotional learning, and other outcomes as required);
*Conduct community outreach, beyond the school community, and surveys for program assessment as necessary;
*Design after-school program centered around student interest and community feedback;
*Manage recruitment, attendance, and dismissal of students attending the school’s after-school programs;
*Create special events that promote family engagement and the YANY brand;
*Manage and support a Program Coordinator and other community school program staff in their goals and career development;
*Support the school with daily tasks such as lunch duty, checking for student wellness, and other tasks as requested by school leadership;
*Attend YANY staff meetings and prepare community school program presentations to the Board and funders as required.
All other responsibilities as may be assigned.
Requirements:
*Bachelor’s Degree preferred, Masters a plus;
*5 year experience working within a NYC Department of Education (DOE) school (especially in a community school) highly preferred;
*Ability to work effectively with and mobilize school-aged youth, educators, families, and partner organizations from a wide range of cultural and economic backgrounds;
*Demonstrated management experience to lead after-school staff;
*Superior communications and organizational skills;
*Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Salesforce (or similar) a plus;
*Commitment to racial and social justice;
*Bi-lingual Spanish preferred, but not required;
*Friendly, enthusiastic, and professional demeanor with a belief in a diverse workforce;
*Must pass DOE fingerprinting and background clearances;
*Ability to work the occasional weeknight/weekends for school events or meetings.
Salary: $70,000-$75,000/yr
