What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2nd Class Welder - Honolulu position at Young Brothers?
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To weld material in an installation, modification, or repair capacity upon marine and shore side equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
* Layout, fabricates, fits up, and welds plating, structural shapes, membranes and piping of various metals for new installations, modifications and repairs to marine and shoreside equipment.
* Recognizes properties and weld ability of materials commonly used in marine and shoreside applications.
* Performs arc and gas welds with and without backing rings in all positions on piping and structural steel.
* Performs gas burning and cutting as required.
* Re-sockets tow wires by cutting off existing socket, prepares end of tow wire and installs new or existing socket.
* Interprets and determines material requirements and performs tasks from blueprints, drawings, and shop manuals.
OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:
Performs other duties within classification.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works indoors and outdoors, occasionally in extreme heat, wet, humid, noisy, odorous, and dusty conditions. Occasionally works in confined spaces and elevated heights. Is exposed to paints, solvents, thinners, fumes, and gases.
Equipment Use: Uses welding, cutting, and related equipment. Operates company truck, forklifts, and other equipment. Must have and be able to operate standard welder's tools.
Work hours: Work week varies between Monday through Friday, and Tuesday through Saturday. Normal work hours consist of 7 1/2 hours daily. Overtime may be required to meet maintenance time schedules, including work on weekends and holidays.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
* Must have good verbal, written, reading and comprehension skills to interpret and determines material requirements from interpreting blueprints, drawings, and shop manuals.
* Must be able to attentive to details and alert at all times.
* Must be able to do simple math to calculate/measure material requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
* Sitting: Seldom to plan or read blueprints and manuals.
* Climbing/balancing: Occasionally when board barges and tugs.
* Stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling: Occasionally to weld various structures and working in/on barges and tugs.
* Squatting: Occasionally to perform various welding jobs.
* Jumping: Seldom when boarding barges.
* Twisting: Occasionally to weld and cut various structures.
* Standing: Frequently when welding containers and cutting various structures.
* Walking: Frequently when going to and from various jobs.
* Running: Seldom when responding to an emergency.
* Reaching: Frequently in performing various welding jobs, and pickup up tools and materials.
* Throwing (Overhead, low level): Seldom
* Handling: Frequently in using tools and materials.
* Fingering: Frequently in adjusting welding/cutting equipment.
* Use of Corrected vision: Constantly to weld, cut, operate vehicles, and read blueprints.
* Depth perception: Frequently to weld, cut, fabricate and operate vehicles.
* Wide field of vision/Color vision: Occasionally to drive vehicles, work in the yard environment, differentiate plate color codes and identify material by spark tests.
* Pushing/Pulling/Lifting/Carrying up to 50 pounds: Occasionally to move tools around.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS (Licenses, Degrees, Certificates):
* Must be certified according to USCG or ABS codes.
* Must have valid driver's license.
* Must have adequate hand tools to perform the job.
Skills knowledge:
* Must be able to perform arc and gas welds.
* Must be able to operate forklifts properly and safely.
Education/Training: High School Diploma or GED is required. Two (2) years technical training and three (3) years field experience or graduate or accredited apprenticeship program and three (3) years field experience or seven (7) years field experience.
