What are the responsibilities and job description for the Machine Operator I position at Young Brothers?

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY: Operates in a safe and professional manner on all types of cargo handling equipment such as forklifts, chassis and hustlers, etc. to move containerized, palletized and bulk cargo to its point of destination. Performs a variety of duties related to the loading and unloading of the barge or as assigned. Once qualified at MO I, Machine Operators at each port will rotate according to a schedule determined by Machine Operators at the port, which will be subject to approval by the Port Manager. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * MO I Operates 4 ton to 50 ton forklifts to: * MO II is qualified to operate up to 5 ton and in training to operate up to 50 ton, to: * Load and unload cargo from the barge. * Load and unload cargo from customers' vehicles. * Load and unload palletized cargo on and off the flatracks. * Discharge incoming cargo for outports. * Load, unload, and sort refrigerated cargo, to and from customer vehicles, in and out of containers, and within Ice House work area. * Loading/unloading/sorting of Hazmat. * Operates various types of roll-on and roll-off equipment to load and unload barge such as hustlers, caterpillars, etc. * Reports the condition of the forklift he/she is operating to the Supervisor, if repairs or adjustments are necessary. * Machine Operator I ("MO I") must be proficient in the use of cargo handling equipment up to 50 ton. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: PHYSICAL DEMANDS: * Operating forklift, cargo handling equipment, RO-RO equipment. * Assists in coning and deconing of containers, lashing gear, etc. * Assists in lashing RO-RO equipment and also blocking automobiles. * Squatting/Jumping/Twisting/Standing: Assists Utility Stevedores. * Getting to and from the forklifts and mobility around the piers. * As necessary in getting to and from the forklifts and mobility around the piers. * Assists Utility Stevedores in coning and deconing of the containers. * Must have corrected vision, depth perception, and wide field of vision as required to obtain a driver's license to operate automobiles and to operate power-operated vehicles under OSHA Standard 1917.27(a)(2). * Duties require good eyesight and alertness due to the constant movement and heavy traffic flow of autos, trucks, heavy equipment, and forklifts/hi-lifts at the facilities. * Pushing/Pulling/Lifting/Carrying: 50 pounds, cargo which may not be able to be lifted by a forklift, picking up cargo which fell off a pallet, etc. WORKING CONDITIONS: * Outdoors in humid, noisy, dusty, wet and odorous conditions. * Occasionally exposed to paints, solvents, thinners, lead, and gases. Frequently exposed to fumes from forklifts, trucks and heavy equipment. * Equipment Use: Various types of automobiles, forklifts, hustlers, and various type of RO-RO equipment. * MO I Operates 4 ton to 50 ton forklifts; MO II is qualified to operate up to 5 ton and in training to operate up to 50 ton. * Work hours: Normal work hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Hours vary with the needs of Operations to meet the sailing schedules. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver's license required. Skills knowledge: Must be able to safely operate all types of automobiles, cargo handling equipment, forklifts. Must have basic knowledge of loading cargo. Must be OSHA forklift certified. : High School diploma or GED equivalent, sufficient verbal, reading, and writing skills as necessitated by the job. i.e., reading signs, labels, barge plans, communicating with customers and co-workers, writing damage and incident reports.Experienced as a Utility Stevedore and have knowledge and capability of barge loading operations.
