The Field Engineer schedules on-site activities with customers, vendors and carriers, as related to installing, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining all equipment associated with ENA services to the customer premise, including data, voice, and wireless communication systems. They will define and diagnose issues by applying technical expertise, product knowledge, communication and problem-solving skills, as well as use independent judgment to determine root problem cause and provide resolution to the customer. The Field Engineer must manage multiple assignments with shifting priorities and time frames to meet customer expectations, as well as provide leadership to other Field Engineers through training activities and mentoring, and assist with dispatching contractors as part of an after-hours on-call rotation. They advise Service Delivery management of process improvements that can help increase efficiency and customer satisfaction. Responsibilities: Collaborates with ENA Engineers, Project Managers, and others to initiate technical process changes to improve serviceability, efficiency and customer experience. Works with customers, vendors, and carriers to schedule on-site activities surrounding all trouble, survey and installation work. Preps and tests hardware for installation. Updates firmware for each device. Ensures that all config components are in place and ready for production prior to dispatch. Travels to customer locations to install, troubleshoot and support inside wiring from carrier’s demarc to access router. Troubleshoots network hardware problems, utilizes network analyzers and tests equipment. Responsible for knowing when to escalate issues to appropriate support group. Interacts with third party vendors and consultants on behalf of ENA. Handles low voltage demarc extensions and cross connects between network devices which requires high-level knowledge of Ethernet communications and Layer 2 switching of the OSI model. Has a firm grasp on layer 1 connections (Cat 5 & 6 terminations, house cabling RJ21X and 66 blocks, identifying different fiber terminations) which will also be used heavily while in the field. Creates, updates and maintains accurate site documentation including all pictures and documents associated with ISP and OSP work for ENA builds into customer’s facilities. Documents all project and trouble work proficiently in an internal ticketing system. During ISP/OSP surveys, works with vendors and carriers to identify the most cost-effective pathway for both the customer and ENA. Works with the vendor to have a firm quote generated in a timely fashion for Project Management approval and PO creation. Maintains appropriate equipment levels for specific coverage area. Work with Inventory Management to obtain hardware for upcoming installs. Tests and repairs equipment returned from customer locations. Responsible for adhering to departmental inventory management discipline and keeping ENA’s Asset Management tool accurate and up-to-date in association with activities performed. Part of an after-hours on-call rotation to assist with dispatching contractors to service the needs of our customers. Provides leadership to all field engineers by establishing, documenting and continuously improving training material on ENA’s products and services. Assist with training sessions to ensure Service Delivery consistently meets key performance metrics related to handling of incidents and installations. Mentor and coach field engineers to deliver high customer satisfaction. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Minimum of 5 years of experience in the data networking field. CCNA certification required along with experience working with Cisco products outside of a lab environment. CCNP certification is a plus. Extensive knowledge of layer 1, 2 & 3 problem determination is needed. Experience with TCP/IP and IPX protocols, routing protocols, WAN protocols, telecommunication technologies (Frame Relay, ATM, MPLS, HDLC, PTP, Wireless) and LAN technologies (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet) is a requirement. Experience working with carriers and troubleshooting high- capacity data circuits is a requirement. Knowledge of PSTN and VoIP is a plus. Experience working in a leadership role is a plus. Relies on experience and best judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under limited supervision. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, or technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions. Ability to communicate technical concepts to mix of non-technical and technical people. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and bend. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is moderate and changes daily. Work Hours: Company hours accommodate our customer’s needs; evening, late night, and weekend hours are sometimes required to coordinate customer project work, maintenance, or emergency trouble restoration. This is an exempt position so the hours of work will be dependent on the work that needs to be addressed to accomplish the work ascribed to this position. Travel: Travel is required 90% of the time. Must be willing to stay overnight as needed. A good driving record and a valid driver’s license are required to maintain this position. Travel can be local or anywhere in our customer base.
