Position Summary
We are hiring a Lab Operations Lead to join a fast-growing R&D team focused on developing the company’s proprietary biotechnology for making sustainable, ‘green’ products. This position is a dynamic role that will offer a breadth of industry-specific knowledge and experiences toward building the infrastructure of a life sciences company and streamlining R&D operations. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and great communicator with a keen sense for both execution and collaborating in a multi-disciplinary setting, all of which will afford the individual with numerous opportunities for growth and defining their career trajectory.

Position Summary

Responsibilities
- Oversee basic laboratory operations for the company’s various R&D groups, identify opportunities for streamlining general activities, and assist with improving operational efficiencies
- Refine and subsequently manage the company’s inventories (strains, R&D products, chemicals, consumables, equipment), and establish a system that is readily accessible and straightforward to use by the research team
- Handle the purchasing of biotechnology consumables and chemicals: routinely interface with the R&D groups regarding needs, with accounting regarding budget, and with vendors regarding product pricing & availability
- Oversee the company’s safety policies including developing general lab safety and compliance protocols, conducting regular Safety Committee meetings, and ensuring employees are trained and documentation is completed
- Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to oversee the timely shipment of product & equipment as well as to minimize delays; efficiently communicate with the R&D team regarding expected delivery dates
- Interface with researchers to identify options for capital/equipment, and work with vendors to acquire quote and technical specifications
- Coordinate equipment maintenance/repair between the R&D groups and vendors & service providers
- Handle lab-related & office-related matters such as IT-related needs/issues, waste management, facilities access, and utility needs
- Learn about & subsequently lead/assist with various aspects of the non-lab operations including budget management and human resource and safety matters
- Lead efforts or collaborate with senior personnel toward identifying, designing, and procuring new laboratory and office space to support the R&D and personnel space needs as the company continues to grow
- MS or BS degree in a life sciences field (Biology, Bioengineering, (Bio)chemistry, or similar)
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a lab environment. Startup experience is preferred
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in managing the lab and/or functional groups.
- Experience working in a laboratory setting with a life science or biotechnology company/startup
- Hands-on experience with chemistry and/or biotechnology-related techniques and devices
- Self-starter who is proficient working day-to-day both independently and in a collaborative setting
- Excellent time management skills along with being effective with multitasking, troubleshooting, and improvising work plans while maintaining efficiency
- Keen sense for both physical (lab) and data-oriented organization
- Proactive communicator with developed interpersonal skills in training others and achieving compliance with requests
- Familiarity working with research supply marketplaces and procurement platforms such as Quartzy and Zageno
- Savvy with computers and adept at readily becoming proficient with new software; fluent in ≥1 scripting tool (e.g., Python, R) is a plus
- Must be able to move up to 50 pounds and move around the lab facility between multiple locations
