The mission of the Big Hole Watershed Committee is to seek understanding of and agreement among individuals and groups with diverse viewpoints on water use and management in the Big Hole River watershed of southwest Montana. Our efforts fall into 4 Focus Areas: Land Use Planning: Initiatives are in climate resiliency, specifically riparian protection standards and incentives for landowners to preserve riparian systems. Water Quality & Water Quantity: Initiatives are to gain climate resiliency, specifically in water scarcity & high water temperature. Actions are through management plans, monitoring, research, and restoration activities. Wildlife: Initiatives are to reduce predator-human conflict with non-lethal deterrence. Invasive Species: Initiatives are to reduce and prevent invasive species infestation, particularly noxious weeds. We achieve this through 4 mechanisms: Planning and Research: We lead and support efforts on research, prioritizations, and coordinated plans. Education: Education is important for understanding the need for watershed restoration and protection. We educate our stakeholders through educational presentations, watershed tours of restoration projects, online media, newsletters, and more. Restoration: We host restoration projects that improve water quantity, quality and riparian health. Examples include implementing irrigation infrastructure upgrades, installing stream flow measurement devices, culvert replacements, and willow planting. Preservation/Protection: We work with groups that provide preservation through easements or other land protections methods and incentives. We are committed to: Involving all interests that are willing to seek practical solutions that benefit all interests; Promoting a common understanding among individuals and groups with diverse viewpoints; Fostering the ability of local individuals and groups to create effective solutions to local problems; and Seeking long-term solutions based on sound information.
