The Catalogue for Philanthropy has been developing our own systematic taxonomy of philanthropic fields since 1997. We needed to present, in our annual publications, an ever-increasing number and variety of charities in all fields, all across Massachusetts, organized to attract, help, and encourage donors. In working with thousands of charities over the years, we found that they are all subsumable within three basic and closely complementary categories: Nature-our relations with the physical environment; Culture, our relations with what humans think and make; and People, our relations with each other. These categories are extremely stable over time (for data-gathering and analyses)-they were Classically proposed by Aristotle in his Physica, Meta-Physica, and Ethica. Together, they form a natural and comprehensive sequence, from the physical world, through humans' interactions with it, to human interactions with each other. In 2005 we discovered that the number of philanthropic organizations is much smaller than everyone thought, which meant that we could produce on-line a complete directory to them all, accessible to everyone all the time, instead of just a few at a time in an expensive annual printed publication. Deciding to do that meant that we needed to elaborate our taxonomy further, to accommodate several thousand more charities beyond the seven hundred we had listed up until then. We consulted widely, for suggestions. A senior research officer for a leading data organization told us, "Taxonomy is HARD", and he was right, but we did it anyway.
