The Columbus County Community Farmers Market was established in 1998. In 1999, the market received a $10,000 grant from the Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI-USA) and continued to grow in a downtown parking lot location. The North Carolina Secretary of State incorporated the organization on January 19, 2001. Also in 2001, the market relocated to a temporary shelter near the Cooperative Extension Service and the Columbus County Department of Social Services buildings. The number of vendors and customers has nearly doubled since the move from the downtown location. In 2004, with the help of two (2) grants totaling $125,000 from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, the farmers market is now housed in a permanent 60' x 120' open-air shelter with a concrete floor. The facility, constructed in 2005, provides ample parking, 20 vendors spaces, electricity and public restrooms, and is a thriving, centralized marketplace for area farmers to sell their locally grown produce to the public.

What Skills Does a person Need at Columbus County Schools?

  1. Child Care: Child care, otherwise known as day care, is the care and supervision of a child or multiple children at a time, whose ages range from six weeks to thirteen years. Child care is the action or skill of looking after children by a day-care center, nannies, babysitter, teachers or other providers. Child care is a broad topic that covers a wide spectrum of professionals, institutions, contexts, activities, and social and cultural conventions. Early child care is an equally important and often overlooked component of child development. Child care providers can be children's first teachers, and therefore play an integral role in systems of early childhood education. Quality care from a young age can have a substantial impact on the future successes of children. The main focus of childcare is on the development of the child, whether that be mental, social, or psychological. In most cases children are taken care of by their parents, legal guardians, or siblings. In some cases, it is also seen that children care for other children. This informal care includes verbal direction and other explicit training regarding the child's behavior, and is often as simple as "keeping an eye out" for younger siblings. Care facilitated by similar-aged children covers a variety of developmental and psychological effects in both caregivers and charge. This is due to their mental development being in a particular case of not being able to progress as it should be at their age. This care giving role may also be taken on by the child's extended family. Another form of childcare that is on the rise in contrast to familial caregiving is that of center-based child care. In lieu of familial care giving, these responsibilities may be given to paid caretakers, orphanages or foster homes to provide care, housing, and schooling.
  2. child development: Child development refers to the sequence of physical, language, thought and emotional changes that occur in a child from birth to the beginning of adulthood.
  3. CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combines rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth) and chest compressions to temporarily pump enough blood to the brain until specialized treatment is available.
  4. Early Childhood Education: Early childhood education, also known as nursery education, is a branch of education theory that relates to the teaching of children from birth up to the age of eight.
  5. Professional development: Professional development refers to continuing education and career training after a person has entered the workforce in order to help them develop new skills, stay up-to-date on current trends, and advance their career.
