DC Doors provides formal, comprehensive life skills education for clients in the Women's Haven Program and Family First Program. This service is a key component of our transitional housing work. The women who come to DC Doors are facing multiple issues, which may include language barriers, family and cultural issues, money management, depression or domestic violence. Due to the crises through which they have lived, they have not been able to develop the life skills necessary to become self-sufficient and maintain safe, affordable housing. These issues affect their children as well. DC Doors requires all women in our program to participate in education and training in the areas of parenting, money management, organization, cooking and nutrition, healthy living, healthy relationships, job readiness, and home maintenance. The women learn how to build a strong parent-child relationship, opening a bank account and balancing a checkbook, applying for a job, or learning how to shop for nutritional items at the grocery store. Life skills education provides the tools that teach and empower our women to become healthy individuals as well as parents and self-supporting members of our community. DC Doors provides an average of 15 hours a month of life skills instruction to each participant. Every woman who resides in our program participates in life skills education during her 18 month stay. Life Skills classes provide instruction on: Parenting Education Money Management Getting Organized Cooking And Nutrition Healthy Living Healthy Relationships Job Readiness Home Maintenance We welcome our community partners to teach our women life skills in the field of their expertise.
