The Embassy of Panama offered a cocktail honoring the Embera Indians on their 2,500 miles journey aboard the Pajaro Jai ("The Enchanted Bird") yacht from Panama to Washington D.C. The event, which took place on this 92 feet long yacht, hand built by the Embera themselves after 12 years of hard labor, was praised and admired by distinguished guests and members of the Embassy staff. Special guests to the event included members of the Diplomatic community from Costa Rica, Colombia, Argentina, Guatemala, Paraguay, Cuba and Nicaragua, members of the Panamanian Government as well as representatives of U.S. Government Agencies and NGO's. The Embera, with the help of the Pajaro Jai Foundation, an NGO created to empower indigenous societies, are using the boat and their journey as a platform to showcase their culture, their talent, and to take control of their future by becoming one of a kind entrepreneurs. Education for their people, while preserving their culture is another crucial issue for the Embera. Alberto Rito, spokesman of the Embera mentioned that "we will like to open a high school for our children in Mogue, were they can learn Spanish and our dialect as well. Out of my six children, only the first three speak our dialect, and the youngest ones only speak Spanish, that is a concern to me". During his ...
