Harbor High School offers a wide range of Honors and AP courses for students to take starting as early as their 10th grade year. Students and parents unfamiliar with the many advantages of taking such classes are highly encouraged to find out more. And because there are so many advantages, we try to maximize opportunity for students to take these courses as much as possible. Rotating classes from year to year has helped us do this and expanding our Honors and AP offerings continues to be a priority. One unique feature about our Honors and AP program is that we do not require a special admissions process. This is true for our intensive and accelerated classes as well which students are encouraged to take if they wish for more rigorous preparation. These are not required, however, and students will find that our regular college-preparatory courses in each of the core subject areas fully prepares them to move to an Honors or AP level class at whatever point they wish. It also means that students who have not had the experience of taking more advanced level courses early on can still do so later as they develop the skills to be successful. Some ask about why we do not offer a specialized academy. This is because we try to provide a rich experience for ALL students in all our courses at every grade level. Just one of many examples of this includes our annual spring Shakespearean performances brought to us by a professional company for all 9th and 10th graders. We also prefer to emphasize pathways that provide exposure to career opportunities. For example, Harbor has especially strong pathways in the Media Arts and Medical / Science fields. And finally, we know that students' needs and interests may change tremendously from year to year. Allowing for flexibility in scheduling without locking students into a specific set of courses early on in their academic careers supports this. Students interested in taking an intensive, Honors or AP course are encouraged to talk to the teacher and counselor.
